OK, if we're going to talk about bass players as sex objects, I submit two early favs, Tina Weymouth and Suzi Quatro.

Hi, She's wonderful to watch and very good, but these comparisons are ... strange ... short list: Carrie Melbourne (even played with Mike Oldfield and also plays a Chapman Stick! Try adding that to the men's club!) Mishell Ndegeocello Esperanza Spalding Tina Weymouth Music is, at this day and age ... a global and communal thing ... and I'm not sure that these preferences show these people for their natural talent and ability properly ... we get stuck on one thing only -- the fame and the looks ... and forget that music is ... music ... and there is a lot more out there than we can think of. Google had a nice list ... if you need to see it.

I know a couple of guys who never "got" Jeff Beck. Then they watched him play in something like the Live at Ronnie Scotts video. They may still not care for his music, but their appreciation of his abilities went way up.

There is also the fact that perhaps for younger players listening to Beck it seems like he isn't doing anything all that special or unique. Thing is though... he was the originator of a LOT of those licks, riffs and deedleedoops. A lot of his fancier stuff reminds me of Satriani (and Vai)... who I listened to quite a bit when I first started playing. Of course the Satch came MUCH later than Beck and Satch taught Vai. Once I got my hands on some Beck stuff it blew me away he was doing those things so much earlier. Then there is Zappa who did a lot of similar stuff when he soloed. Not sure if Beck influenced him or vice versa or if they both came to it all organically on their own (it's really just modal mayhem). Whatevs... Beck is kind of the grandpappy of that spacey, modal slickster rock sound... and he does it, IMO, in a more mature, tasteful, less flashy way than those other guys (not including Zappa Sr in that... he was something different). That is totally ignoring his blues stuff which is a whole 'nother style and goes waaaay further back. His supporting material is also much more inclusive and tasteful than Satch/Vai too who's backing bands are mostly just there for them to shred over. This of course can be seen in the vid above and his inclusion of Tal in the band in the first place. She's actually much flashier/more physically proficient than he is IMO. He's actually kind of sloppy compared to her. Meh... he was doing his thing before I was even born (WAY before) so my perspective/history is likely just as skewed as other youngin's. I'd imagine listening to Beck back in the day would have been utterly mind blowing.

I like anything that's composed well, including a guitar solo. Jeff Beck does a great job of that. If you're a guitar player listening to another guitar player, you should envy *it's* creativity not just push it away. Shredding is just like a word salad. Think Sarah Palin versus JFK. When I hear lousy solos, I think of Sarah.

Weeeell... I'm an unrepentant shredder and have been for pretty much the whole time I've played. However I'd like to think I've learned to build up to a shred in a tasteful way. Not just wank for the sake of wanking. I do also play a plethora of styles that are totally unshred related. I just generally prefer fast music... because I'm a spazz. I pride myself more on my rhythm playing though. There is so much more interesting stuff that can be done with rhythm guits.

I do not dislike Jeff Beck, however, with that said, he does deserve some credit for some ability and talent in the rock music story. Even if it was for his well placed solos and bits and pieces, although I do not think that he is the original and the best ever. I always found some things he did, were also found elsewhere, and not exactly the most original person, but certainly one of the big names that helped bring a lot of different music to people, and I'm OK with that. One of the examples, was how he copied Terje Rypdal some 20 years later on a Roger Waters album ... it was nice, but a bit late if you ask me. Some things are OK with me, like playing a solo of Turandot, but it did not even mean a whole lot to most rock fans ... but it does tell you that his inspiration for music comes from ... and I'm not surprised. And this is the part that we always tend to not find or see, I would imagine. I would rather take a Jeff Beck, than an Eric any day of the week! At least I know I will get some serious guitar playing!

I've heard talk of these 'youngers'. Although I don't know of any female bass players, any talk of 'best' or 'better' or whatever wrt musicians is a right old nonsense. If you think that music is a form of competition in any way shape or form, you just haven't got it at all. I still don't much like Jeff Beck, although I'm sure he's a very nice guy.

I agree ston, but we're churning out hundreds (thousands!) of new musicians, because academia is conning them into thinking that this art will lead to beaucoup bucks. The pie is smaller which is good in away, I've never had a problem sharing my toys. But, in the end art while subjective CAN be best, better, or good. Unfortunately academia is really dulling their minds. One learns more working a full time job at Subway about poly ticks in (the music business) than they seem to ever do when they hit the real world. Unfortunately street smarts can't be taught...they have to be experienced. If you do best, better, good music than others AND you have those skills only then are you going to have a clue. I've experienced great, selfless teachers and I've experienced narcissistic monsters that call them selves teachers. That's where the quality finally comes from, a teacher who is in it for the sake of the student, not only themselves.

I read a forum post once that claimed Hendrix was "overrated". The poster seemed to think his style was unoriginal, because every guitar player knows those licks. It didn't occur to him that somebody had to invent them first.
