Tales of Nocturne (String Quartet)
I've been working on arranging my piece Tales of Nocturne for a string quartet. I must say that it was harder than I thought it would be. Normally I'll keep throwing on more instruments for help give an overall sound, But I wanted to make it work with just 4 instruments, so that it is possible to play live. Anyway the link is down there. Please let me know your views/opinions and general feeling on it. That sounds really excellent! If that is soft synths you know how to work them to get them sounding real. Enjoyed it ALOT!

Not easy to do... This is pretty good. That solo violin is so expressive... It felt as if the cellos were a tad out of time in places.

The lower repeated melody notes during the first half sound a little off pitch to me for some reason, or perhaps it's the built-in "bend" that they have. When the melody jumps up higher during the second half it "feels" better to me.
But other than I think this turned out pretty well!

I agree with teego on the sound of the violins. Pretty convincing on the lead there. I like the composition. In my opinion the lead violin would sound better if if the midrange were more subtle. Good work though.

I'll go along with the other posts, just wonder why the lead sounds in the left channel more with the echo in the right.
??
Perhaps because of the other part, but then I would have had that part in both channels, and the lead in the center, maybe.

Hey guys, thanks for giving this one a go.
Yes, I have struggled on this one. This is the best that I've got it so far.
Normally when a string quartet plays live they are positioned from left to right as following; 1st violin, 2nd violin, viola and cello. Now I didn't want the 1st violin to be far left because of the strange panning, so I swapped the 1st and 2nd, then pulled it in to the center a little more, I think its panned about 30 or 40 to the right. I was unsure about panning it central, cuz I was trying to keep the piece balanced, only using 4 instruments means that on the right is the viola and cello, on the left is the 2nd and 1st violin.
Perhaps I should listen to a few recordings of quartets to hear how is should be balanced.

It is pretty fricken amazing what you did here... What were the plugs used if I may ask? You know, we do have one among us? Scottytunes? He is an "awesome" violinist... It's an incredibly difficult instrument to play, and people who can play it like him deserve much respect. I was fortunate enough to be able to play on a few with Mr. toons. "My high honor to do so." I can play a bowed instrument? But the only thing that comes out the other end are arrows... (you don't want to be down range? I'm a pretty good musician? But I'm a better marksman ;-) ----------------- I use EWQL Gold like most others? But I have some really good horn samples from samplemodeling.com And I really like the solo violin from East West "Gypsy?" I think they've discontinued it, but it's a really nice solo violin. And their accordions are "awesome..."

I thought the instrumentation and the parts were very well written, you have a great feel for this sort of music. I would have liked a little more light and shade from the lead, it seemed like it was all played at forte, whereas some softer lines would have given the piece some subtlety.

Thanks Robbie, I just checked out his piece 'Lark Ice Medley' cool playing :) I'll have to get you to record some of your bowing for a future King Arthur or Robin Hood style piece. ;) The plugs are Hollywood strings gold. The lead is EWQL Violin solo. Gypsy is still available and 1 that I would like to get.

Everything sounds really great for me and the balance works out well for the quartet. The mix sounds good and everything falls into place very nicely. Wonderful work on this piece. Enjoyed!!

With a real ensemble it probably would sound nice - but with this midi sounds it is a disaster it sounds terrible i am sorry to say. And how did you managed to involve the hum-sound its a riddle in its own mix heaven.
