Talkback mic

I bought a piece of crap mic, intended for use with applications like Skype, for talkback. The mic works fine when plugged into the 3mm socket on my laptop, but when I plug it in to a preamp at my studio to be used as a talkback mic, I can't get any signal. Any ideas on how I can get it to work? And yes, I did use a 1/4 adapter

I'll have three fingers of Glenlivet, with a little bit of pepper... and some cheese.

Sometimes those 3.5 jacks don't quite go into the adapter quite far enough and no signal is the result have you given it a real good hard press to see if it'll go the last 0.001 of a mm?

is the adapter TS or TRS ? Same question for the Mic. They will need to be the same - both TS or both TRS
