Talkin 'bout my Baby - Blues UPDATED FEB 25th

Updated mix Sat Feb 25 5PM.  Lower piano, raise guitar and vocal,  lower verb overall.

This is from a while back and originally I recorded it with a real band but I was not happy with how it turned out. It got shelved and last winter I dusted it off and started from scratch. I used my Yamaha DTX kit to spark up the drums and I did the bass track in one or 2 takes and took some chances that paid off. I really had no clue what I would do and that's my favorite part of the song , the bass.  The lyrics where actually sort of an in joke with the band. All blues songs sound the same, right?  so I used a bunch of cliche lines.

It's been just sitting around 90% finished waiting for me to compile a whole albums worth so that's were I'm at now.

For those who have time to listen heres my main page with all the songs so far.

    Cool tune.

I like the idea of using all cliche' lines in a song. "They" tell you not to do that, but that seems to be the norm for blues music right?

    Thanks for listening.

In the original version we recorded it live in my old studio , Bass, drums and guitar and there were no words yet, We just wanted a blues jam and I made these words up mostly on the fly without writing them down, That was the big joke about it because it didn't seem to matter as long as you got to play lots of guitar!!
I changed just a few lyrics this time around but not by much.

I updated this song last night too. After listening to all six songs in the car for song to song balance I found a few things overwhelming in this songs mix so made notes and moved a few knobs and volume envelops.

    Sounds good.  Fun blues song...

Your posted link is bad, the link above says the song was removed.   Found it clicking through to your SoundCloud site.

Thanks Mark.. Funny the link seems to be working now.
I updated the page last night by deleting all the songs and re uploading the new versions.
First time I though it would just overwrite the original versions but it just puts a -1 on the end.
So this time I deleted the songs first. Might be that causes a glitch on the web address.

I like this - cool blues tune. My only critique is I think the piano is "distracting" - it needs to move a bit.

You mean it needs to be played by a real keyboard player,, right?? :)

I missed this one John - really cool again. Performances are great.
Mixwise, bring the piano down and take some top end off it  (it dominates the mix) and bring your vocal up and reduce the reverb on the vocal. Only my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback I will get right on it. That's what I need to hear.  I like the piano out front for this song but if it's dominating then that's not good either.
I'm a little self conscious of my keyboard playing as I'm only a hacker who has learned how to use midi to my advantage.  But I am a huge fan of keyboards and what they can add to a a song. I watched a Blue Rodeo video the other day and without the keyboard player, they would be boring.  I have a few "real" keyboard playing musicians who I should really tap into. None of them are into computers so it would require on location recording  at there homes. One of them I worked with a lot as FOH mixer for their band, has a real B3  :)

If anyone here is a real keyboard player and is into reciprocal collaboration I'm all for it. My internet is now capable of this.

That walking bassline is very nice! Cool blues, nice solo too. Last time I was in a band (20 years ago...) we had one called 'Same Old Song' which quoted most of the standard cover songs that blues bands play  Enjoyed this, nicely done.

Thanks James much appreciated.  So looks like you've been there too with playing the Blues. There's only 3 Blues songs really :)      the rest just have different words,,, but still I love nothing more than going to listen to a good blues band. Way up there for me was I got to see Los Lobos in Spokane.

Anyhow I had a chance to fix those few items suggested above, Thanks to all for input on mix.. I do listen to you and take each comment to heart.

Nice one, Johnny!   I really enjoyed this.   I've played in a blues band for 15 years now so I can completely identify with this one.  I didn't hear the original version but this version seems to have a good balance.  Guitars sound really good.

I don't know if there's much to add/change with the piano on this song, but maybe a few fills here and there?  I can also hear a bit stronger Hammond in parts too.  I'll be on vacation for the next week but ping me some time if you're interested...
