Talking Heads Cover-Life During Wartime

unnh...yeah, this one is a bit of a mess I think...tried to play some keys/synth on this ...having a hard time getting them to fit in the mix....early in the game so the drums are a bit straight...not to many fills.....a bit over ambitious for me probably , wish I could capture what I'm hearing in my head for these songs

Very nicely done, you vox even sounded quite a bit like them.  Might bring up the bass a bit but otherwise real nice work on the mix to my ears!

Good fun time on this.  I think the keys come across just fine.  Your drum track is simple and solid, good for dancing.( better sparse than overplayed) Kick and bass could be a little thicker.  Maybe it's just me but it seems as though the vox track fluctates back and forth with the beat, dragging in spots. I like the vox performance and would even bump it up.  I like it............Makes me want my MTV...................Ron

It takes some guts to take that on :-) A pretty cool interpretation of it though. It's hot so I have the fans on, and therefore can't hear fine details of the mix, but as an overall impression and performance I like it. I was kind of thinking, if the RHCPs did this song, it might come out not unlike this, right?

WOW, you sound earily like David Byrne in this so you're halfway there for a start.

This is raw, yes, but in this case i think it works to the tracks advantage.

Loved the lead guitar break, just brilliant.

I think i'd have to say this is my fave of all your cover versions so far and that's coming from someone who listened to a lot of "Talking heads" back in the day, but i  have gone off them a bit since.

    Great stuff.

I think I like this version better than the orioginal.  The vox need to come up a little, pull the synth back a hair and it should all fit together nicely.

dke- Thanks so much! Agree about the bass...tracked it with a autowah/envelope follower type effect thru my podxtl...I think that may have sacrifiecd some lo-end energy for that lead bass sound...will address it upon mix 2.

mike_mccue-Cool man, glad you enjoyed it!

    Jackel-Thanks! Appreciate the listen!

Savageopera - Thanks Ron, I'm a pretty weak vocalist and only do it cause I get tired of recording instrumentals...my cadence or rthym probably does drag as there are a lot of words on this tune, and my breathing was outta wack at times Ahh yes MTV...remember when they were about music?

droddy - Yeah...I was nervous to do this as I have a few friends who are very passionate about the Talking Heads so wouild be super critical...I just like to have fun and kind of pay tribute to all the great music I was locky enough to grow up with and have influence me asa a musician...I can dig the Chili Peppers vibe...maybe its the bass?

blipp - Thanks so much blipp....that 1st guitar solo was my strat and was actually the 1st pass at it...I had planned on letting it sit for a few days and then decide wether to keep it or re-track...I kinda like it tho, and for me and guitar solos ..the 1st couple are usually the best before I start over-thinking them...the second guitar solo(Variax, jazz model) I might re-do...I think the timing's kinda off...will see...Thanks for listening!

Scottytunes-Thanks man! Agree about the vocals..I think I am not consistant thru out the song with my vocal level...will try and even it out....really appreciate it!!

here is my new mix taking all the feedback I have gotten...not sure if it's any better tho'...if anything, to me , it now may have the dreaded"mixed by the guitarist" feel to it...I backed down the synths during the verses, added a straight up bass guitar track(no auto wah funk thang, although the original bass thing is still in there as well) tried to dry up and clear up the vocals, and also added some funky percussion blurgs in and out of the verses ...I'm not sure, but the soundclick sound seems kinda muffled and does not sound at all like the file does before I upload it....not sure if it takes a while for the hi quality version to encode?

WOW... this is huge step towards the familiar original sound.

FWIW, David Bryne used to really work with the proximity effect on the microphone... if you are interested in going further towards the original... I think a bit of woof anf growl may be helpful.

The synth at 3:20 sounds better than the original... good job!

    Thanks for making me smile.

    best regards,
    mike

Mike - Thanks , I think backing down that wacky bass and recording a more traditional type bass line kinda reeled it back in a bit Great point about Byrne's singing style...will try that, although I'm such a non-singer and struggle so much with vocals, It would definetly be tough! Thanks again for listening and your feedback!

Hi there V-Man, this is an excellent cover

The playing is spot on and the mix is clear and punchy - quite an achievement as there's a lot going on in there!

Steve and Biabdude - Thanks guys...I have learned a lot from doing this one...did what i think may be the final mix on this...addition by subtraction I think...got rid of 1 of the synth tracks during the verses, got rid of a large amount of the envelope filter bass guitar, worked on the percussion levels ...here is a link to the last mix:

Incredible cover.  There's a bit of masking of the vocals by the backing instruments.  Very hard to make out the lyrics.

This track has been sitting in front of me for a few days now and I've been itching to get round to listening, I always love your cover treatments.

Here I'm loving the disco-a-go-go feel opposed to the mechanical beat of the original.  The vox are excellent and should be more prominent and all the solo work is great.  In fact there is so much good stuff here I reckon the main backing could do with some extra aggression and definition to re-inforce the intended angry warlike aspect of the song.  No crits on what's there I just feel you can safely go overboard with a bit more sick and angry nastiness...

All in all though a great fun cover of a favourite of mine.

    Ah ... the wartime funk!

Performances are astonishing, per se!  I love the hook "this ain't no disco"

Everything syncs for the motif/hook you started ... vox rhythm is strong, 9/10 rated, IMHO ... I'd probably have 'tried to sculpt' out the competing guitar lead at 2 kHz or ducked out the guitar at that freq to understand those satirical words more.

    Synth at 3:00ish is cool!

In Sum: Top notch message, vox, mix, and performances!!!!

Never heard the original, so can't comment in comparative terms, but this sounds pretty good to me (listening to mix 3). Vox are a little buried in places, making it difficult to hear some of the words, but other than that I think you've done a very good job with quite a busy mix. Congrats.
