Tape Sim crash...

Recently I've been having problems with the Tape Sim plug-in...

every time I add it, Sonar crashes instantaneously. Which is a mega shame as I really love this plugin.

It used to work fine, never had a problem with it, could load up multiple instances of it, now however, as soon as I click to insert it *Crash*

Any ideas why this could be?

Thanks in advance

note: also, when it crashes, I am left with a 'FX2 Tape Sim' stuck on my screen until I reset my computer.

Send the crash dump to Cakewalk. They'll be able to pinpoint where the problem lies. Given the plugin's age, it would seem unlikely - but not impossible - that there is an undocumented bug in there. More likely, it's a missing or incompatible dependency.

I just checked the file's dependencies, which (ignoring standard Windows files) includes DSHOWPROXY.DLL, MFC100.DLL and MSVCR100.DLL.

DSHOWPROXY is a Cakewalk file. MFC100 is a library programmers use to make UI coding easier, and MSVCR100 is a VC++ runtime library that MFC routines call. Make sure all three are present on your system. The latter two should be in your system32 folder. None of the three require registration.

I have 5 instances and 4 different versions of DSHOWPROXY, but the one you care about is the one in the Shared Plugins folder. Its internal version number will be whatever was shipped with your current version of SONAR.

Curiously, the version of DSHOWPROXY.DLL that ships with X1 is older than the version packaged with 8.5. (17.5.2.184 vs. 17.5.2.222). That could be a mistake in packaging, or it could be significant, I don't know. Check which version you have.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Thanks for that, very insightful.

I'm pretty babyish when it comes to all that sort of stuff, still young and clueless! No idea any particular thing causing it, as it been working fine for a long while.

While we're on the subject of tape-sim... are there any other plugins that do a similar(or better) job?

I'll try and have a look for those files and see what I find.

Check out Ferric TDS and Voxengo Tube Amp .

I like FerricTDS, myself. Both are free.

Just curious, as I'm not too clued up on the super techy side of of computering... but do things gradually 'deteriorate' in a system?

As recently my TruePiano has started causing problems too... not so instantaneous as with TapeSim, but when I have it loaded in a project, while playing along, or at a random occasion it will cause Sonar to crash.

Everything worked really fine up until recently. I can't think of any change that may have contributed to this, though I'm wondering if the TruePiano only started playing up since I started working in 24bit (instead of 16)

thanks, Chappel, I will give those a try!
