Tape emulation

Funny that a lot of Buzz is around tape emulation lately.  Products like UAD, Waves, Digi.
I looked at my vsts and found Cakewalk Tape Sim and tested it and thought it did a good job.  Something in my arsenal from Cakewalk and I haven't been using it and it is free.  Thank you Cakewalk!    My all around does the job DAW!

I agree with you Cake's Tape Sim is very useable, though it's horses for courses, I use Cakes Tap Sim for drums it's really good for the drums it gives them real bottom end.

I've used UAD's tape emulator and my opinion and I haven't used it very much is I prefer an outboard compressor with tubes because basicly what you are doing is adding a thinkener to the overall mix and whilst the UAD stuff works and def if you were mastering in the box I would use it, my compressor adds a silkiness to the mix where as the UAD tape emulator sounds a bit like a plastic wrapper going over the mix albeit a nice warm plastic wrapper but you can hear the difference.

    Peace Ben

If it were a realistic tape simulation, it would require frequent cleaning, alignment and calibration, and occasionally just stop working. Plus you'd have to buy $50 worth of virtual "tape" every day just to use it!

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Don't forget degaussing.

There was an interesting bit in SoS about Slate VC and the effect of the console on sound.  I think most of the problem w/ tape/analog emu is the fact that you have to turn it up to 11 to hear it, and then it is too late.

I used to use Tape Sim quite a bit.

I've recently bought Magnetic, which is a bit more flexible, but I find myself wondering if I'll ever find a use for it or any similar device. Most of the "mojo" which manufacturers are trying to replicate via plug-ins seems to take a certain amount of control out of my hands. Which is why I guess they say it's magic: you put it on and it does it's thing, in a one-size-fits-all sort of way. I'm not sure that this works for me these days.

    Just my 2 cents.

i've found that compared to the color i can get with an outboard compressor during tracking, the tape emulation sounds weak, in comparison of dry tracks with emulation, versus my compressor-input tracks

in other words, it doesn't add as much, as even my little cheap desktop compressor can, if you're looking for color.

anything else the emulation tries to do, can be achieved with some judicial eq.

    'wow and flutter'.....?
    cmon, give me a break.
