Tascam Fw-1884 and Sonar 4

Hello, and thank you all in advance for any advice.

I spent the last week setting up my long-planned recording gear. I read the equipment specs, made sure all should be compatible, read all the reviews--but I didn't read many user forums. My mistake!

On the first day I discovered that there is, and has been, a long standing problem with Tascam's Vista 64bit drivers. The drivers won't work correctly with anything more than 2GB of RAM. Well, ain't that just great! I shelled out good money for a loaded, quad-core G4bit monster XPS, just so I can cripple it with 2 Gigs of RAM!

Well, I swallowed that nasty pill and pushed ahead and have since got it all running. (Tascam FW-1884, Behringer ADA8000, Sonar 6, Dell Quad Core XPS with 2GB (formerly 6GB) RAM.

I have three questions:

1.) Is there something I'm missing, is there a magical patch that makes everything better. Has anyone heard if Tascam will EVER fix the problem? I still have time to return the thing and go another route. But, I realy like it, so I'm torn. Any advice.

2.) Are things somehow better with Sonar 8? More stable?

3.) My plan for headphone mixes includes using analog ouotputs 3&4 for the phones mix (1&2 are used for Mains). I can't seem to hear the channel analog (or ADAT) inputs out 3&4. I can get the audio click to play out 3&4 both when recording and playback. I can heard all the recorded tracks out 3&4, but I can't get the currently armed or recording track to play out 3&4. Any Ideas?

Thank you all in advance!

Tom

First off your soanr 4 is not supported with a 64bit OS. this could very well be the sourse of all your problems. I wouldnt wast any more time until you either upgrade sonar or install XP32.

Well, don't I feel a bit foolish. So, clearly some problems I've had must be due to using 4 with Vista64, does anyone know if Sonar 8 does not suffer from the 2GB limit, or is that a Tascam issue?

    Thanks!

I just rechecked. Acutally, I have Sonar 6. ( I was wondering how 4 would have even instaled.) Anyway, as far as my original questions go, please replace Sonar 4 with Sonar 6. Thanks again!

Now that Sonar 4 is replaced with Sonar 6, the next thing you need to replace is the Tascam FW1884. Then you will be in business.

Disgruntled Fw-1884 owner, not user, just owner. It does look cool sitting in the corner of my studio, though.

...the FW1884 works, do a search for the magic combination.

I've had more time to play with this, and am withdrawing the bug remarks.
This appears to work as designed and is actually a pretty cool feature.
