Tascam US-2000 USB Audio Interface Unit
I got one these to evaluate, since my Saffire Pro 40 has a dropout problem after it warms up. My initial impression is I like it. The preamps are better than the MAudio Fastrack Ultra 8R that I also have and closer to the Saffire Pro 40 preamps. I've only recorded some guitar direct tests with a Les Paul and some vocal tests but they both sound very good. What is recorded and played back sounds just like the "direct" input monitoring. The US-2000 is not a "high dollar" unit, but it's in the price range I can afford right now. The only thing, it doesn't have MIDI I/O but I've got other devices that do.

I tracked bass with this unit yesterday. I've got a CD project I'm working on for a singer and added the bass (I used a 5 string Yamaha bass) to some of the songs. The unit did as good as the old Saffire Pro 40. I'll continue the "evaluation" but the more I use it the more I'm inclined to keep it.

I'm not too surprised. I've got a US 1640 that I bought from a friend for a back-up that sounds as good as anything else I own. Probably has the same pre's as the US 2000. Dose well with drums also.

Well, I decided to keep the Tascam. After some more recording, the audio seems to be on a par with the Saffire Pro 40.

Hi fireberd, What is the latency in the US-2000 and how does it compare to the FTU 8R and the Saffire?? I could be interested in the tascam in the near future. thanks

Hey there, I have a US-2000 too... I think it's a nice bang for the buck, no issues at all once Tascam had gotten out the proper 64 bit drivers. Nothing else out there really for 16 in 4 out, 8 pres, you'll need some outboard pres to take full advantage of the inputs. But I like it. I usually use the VS-100 but if I need more that's my go-to interface

I haven't got into trying to change the Latency. It has realtime monitoring for input, thus that is zero latency. For recording with something that has already been recorded, I haven't played with the latency yet. With the lowest latency setting, I'm showing Input 2.7 msec 117 samples, Output 12.3 msec 544 samples and Total roundup 15 msec 661 samples. This is higher than the Fastrack Ultra 8R, but I like the preamps in the Tascam better. I don't remember what I had on the Saffire Pro 40.

I spoke too soon. The Tascam is going back. I can't stand the noise in the headset and line out (for studio monitors). The recording works great, but after a recording session today and the noise, I don't want it. I'll have to start looking again. Crap.

bummer. you almost had me sold. I am having the hardest time finding/deciding on the best USB AI to use with my 64 bit laptop and Sonar X1.

I commented on your other post about the MAudio Fastrack Ultra 8R that works good. I was looking for a second or "backup" unit to replace a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, Firewire unit.
