Tascam us-1641/us-1800 issues/latency/cpu draw

Let me preface that I have searched and read and already have various things to try this weekend but I'll describe my current situation:

CPU - Dual Core 2.8/4 GB RAM
Cakewalk Producer 7
Tascam US-1800 Interface (USB 2.0)

I just received the US-1800 last Tuesday. Before I got it, I was using the M-audio Delta 44 but wasn't that happy with recorded drum sound so I got the 1800 for more mic inputs. I really had no problems with the install and Cakewalk recognized the interface right away. I was using ASIO drivers and did not change any settings in the audio section.
I understand there are latency adjustments I have to make plus also try out ASIO4ALL but my question was on CPU draw.

When I was doing playback the CPU draw was like 90% CPU1 and 30% CPU2. Even when I stopped playback the meter in the lower right hand corner was displaying the same CPU draw (90 and 30). So just sitting idle it was drawing that much?? I switched the audio driver to wdm which made playback acceptable but CPU draw was still 30 and 20. I know the file I'm playing never used that much CPU draw.

I didn't have any problems with the Delta 44 so I'm not that up on audio and power settings.

Is there anyone that has suggestions as to why the CPU draw?? If the latency tweaks will help the CPU draw then if it's not a problem please list any latency tweak/tips/tricks (even though I have a laundry list to try tonight).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to get back to writing and recording vs. troubleshooting.

Try changing the priority for Sonar in the Task Manager to Realtime.

Also try a different USB Port

Or try restarting the tascam unit while in Sonar

have you downloaded the latest drivers from the tascam website?
and dont restart the tascam in sonar..any changes you make need to be made in the preference menu then reboot sonar for some things to take effect.restarting an interface while the app is open causes diconectivity.

sonar 7 might be your problem.  it wasn't until 8.3 that they got core loading corrected fully.

the m-audio delta 44 drivers are pretty rock solid - I'm not sure I would say that for anything by tascam, so it could also be a combination of the 2.

you can disable multicore processing in sonar and that might solve your problem, but you'll also lose the functionality of multithreading.  go to OPTIONS>AUDIO and uncheck USE MULTIPROCESSING

You may want to try a dedicated USB card.  They have different chip sets and some handle audio better than others.  I have a 1641 that Runs fine on one of my systems but won't perform at all on my other system.
