Taylor 414ce acoustic

Just bought this baby yesterday and set it up for DADGAD tuning. Looks like I'll be eating toast for a few months, but that's OK. Between this one and the Larrivee I own, I can cover some musical ground. Not bragging here, just excited and feeling very creative.

It's going to be a Taylor GS series of some kind, don't know what one yet, I have to go play some at banjo center and see what I like.

    Hey Frank,

I have a GS - went with the Cedar/Mahogany w/ expression system. AMAZING guitar - you will be happy with whatever model you choose, I can assure you.

I play a lot of fingerstyle - and cedar just sounded better to me. Cedar as a soundboard is very warm and mellow and bodes well for that type of work.

Another reason I went with cedar is that I also have a 510 which has an spruce top with mahogany back/sides. So, no reason to have two guitars so similar. Another thing with spruce is that it really takes a while for it to age and sound 'great', IMHO. My 510 is 10+ years old and sounds better every time I play it - in short, spruce gets better with age and cedar is pretty much the same from the time you play it. Cedar is a very soft wood so on non-lacquered tops, you have to very careful - picks will destroy them. The GS has a nice finish, so you won't have to worry about that.

There's two cedar topped GS models - rosewood and mahogany back/sides. If you like cedar tops - it's just a matter of playing them both to figure out which one you like better. I just thought the mahogany was a bit brighter with longer sustain. The Rosewood had a little better low end though. An example, and I know this for sure - a lot of bluegrass rhythm players prefer rosewood/spruce guitars. If you play acoustic 'lead' and want to cut through a mix, many folks prefer mahogany/? guitars.

    There's a few video's on Taylor's site here: http://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/archive/2006/GS/Videos.aspx

Vince Gill had one of my favorite guitar quotes. He said:

"It takes 10 years for a guitar to quit thinking like it's a tree."

Good Luck - I played one of these when it first came out and knew I would own one. Just took me a while to figure out which one.

For those who love to drool over great guitars, at Merlfest in Wilksboro Nc in the spring, there is also a large tent there with vendors of some great instruments. I was drooling like a ST Bernard dog. Some of the instrument makers only make a few instruments a year, others are reping Taylor and others. There must have been 500-1000 guitars, mandolins, fiddles and more.

Taylors sound great. If I were serious about acoustic guitars, they'd be on my short list. I think a $1,900 Taylor makes at least as much sense as a $1,900 Jackson.

For some reason I can justify in my mind paying that much for an acoustic but not an electric, an acoustic just seems harder to make or something. LOL !

Or, it might be that I can build my own electric guitar from parts if I want to so it doesn't seem like that big a deal. Kinda like looking at modern art, if I can do it.. it's not art. LOL !! I can't build an acoustic guitar so I apply more value to it.

First the Larivee. Then the Taylor. Next the divorce...............? Flo must be feeling very tolerant these days. Or else she's just decided to let you have your way, maybe nobody will get hurt. Terrific acquisition.
