Articles like this one completely freak me out. I feel like I'm living in a middle aged panic attack.
Nothing new, really. It's always been like that.
This world has been run and controlled by feudal lords for thousands of years, and nothing has changed. The money always goes to one area, and if you took your Sociology 101 class, you know that 3% of the people control 97% of the economy.
And the companies all buying out the smaller ones is a part of the plan. You marry off the ugly daughter to that idiot over there and his property and money is now a part of your conglomerate.
If you think, with a socialist/democratic ideal of some sort, you will be highly disappointed. From my days of Fascism in Portugal/Spain, to the coup in Brazil, to the senseless killing in America of peace advocates, there is only one group that is defending their right to be in power, and in places like Latin America, these folks are vicious and they don't care what happens to the peons!
Just remember that. Don't think that the drug wars in Latin America is just about the drugs! That's grossly naive! It's about the power involved and having enough of it, so you can control more and benefit from it.
Now, why the fudge would you be surprised by that? It's no different in America when these companies keep getting bigger so they can get the government to protect them, and they do not have as much liability when it comes to screwing the peons.
Heck, the law allows it. The law is designed to protect the rich and those in power!
But think about this one. In Spain, if you buy a house and you lose it, because you can't pay for it, you are still liable for the total amount of money that you owe. You not only will never buy another house, you will make sure that the rich f----- keeps getting paid ... and that rich f----- was the guy that made sure you lost the job and the ability to pay for the house! It's been like that in Europe for hundreds of years.
Stop fooling yourself!
