BIABDude build--- + + + 1 ashtray --- ? Thanks Dude! An ashtray is a bridge cover for Tele's. The original style has a border all around except the side towards the neck. The cover would slide on it. The cover was to protect your picking hand from the bridge saddle screws. One big reason I didn't go original is because of that border. It can interfere with finger picking. Some of them have some of the border removed due to that. They remind me of when AMF took over Harley....cheap slab of chrome era. lol Well I managed to repair the blowout. I also got the fretboard started and the ebony control cover....busy afternoon. It's easy to see the line where the "ear" is added. I was lucky in that the blowout didn't go past that. Made for a pretty easy repair.

In the last photo you can see how I shaped the head and drilled for the machines. Sure want to do that before ya start working to where I'm at in the photo below. Cut head close to finish thickness. Install truss-rod. Glue on fretboard. Glued the fretboard yesterday so this eve I cleaned/sanded where it meets the neck/body and sanded the taper/curve from nut end of board to the head. I'll press the frets in next. I'll be easier without the body. I didn't want this guitar to have a Tele shaped head so I made a little modification. If it's like some other...oh well. If you notice the darker spots....just sweat. This is the first piece of ebony I've seen that I liked the light gray....you may be able to see it ( I know it's there) in the first shot. Right now I'm thinking leave it.- don't dye it. We'll see. What cha think Grant? ....LOL I'm tryin' bro! Haven't given up...be patient with me..please We should be seeing some body work in the next few days...weekend probably.

Fretboard progress...sanded to 320. Will have to dye. Sand to over 6000 grit before setting frets. After frets set I'll wrap the head and neck to protect and move to body. Leveling, dressing and polishing frets will be after body is ready for hardward....probably. The black liquid is black super glue. 5mm abalone fret dots 2mm side markers

Michael, I showed my son a picture of the bass you built for Ed and he said he had a friend who built an electric guitar in high school. It wasn't until he got it finished that he realized he'd built it for a left-hander. And he's not left-handed. (He was quite impressed with the bass, too, btw.) :)

Probably seems slow to you Grant....me too, lol. Wouldn't sound right if I said I was trying something new... everything i try seems new to me! Thanks Craig. Yes it's a neck thru. I'm glad I could save it as I've lost a neck block (2 necks) that warped and two zebra tops (blow outs) already in this build. I'm sure getting a taste of things that can go wrong. That's quite a story Janet. That guy doesn't do tatoos now does he? lol Well the frets are in now. Trimmed but I'll wait before I level and dress them and polish the fretboard. Got top and back routered. Tele's have a 1/4" roundover on the edge. Got the control cavity ebony cover inlayed. I really like it. Flush with the body seems so cool opposed to just a metal plate screwed to the top. The screws to hold it are inset too. Got the pickup cavities for the top and the soft maple ready with wire channels so tomorrow I'll start the body assembly. Four different pieces for the body...I think I have the assembly figured right....never done it so....we'll see. More and better luck than what I've had would be welcomed. Long day.

In a few days I'll have a better picture to post that will give a real good idea. I'm currently assembling the body to the neck. Zebra would not be a good would to paint. It would be a waste of money and would take a lot of prep work for a nice paint. Just not a good thing to do...lot better wood choices for painting.....Alder would be mine probably.

Man it seems everything is so hard to do. Trying to glue stuff together without pins/dowels, pieces just slide around when they're being clamped and all the time taken fiddlin' around trying to line up...the glue is setting up. Unclamped it last night and cleaned up the side enough to check laminates. Drilled and routed out pup cavities. Well I did make it this far and looks like it might make it so I'll start shaping the neck next. Then sanding...days and days and just when you think it's there..sand some more. Gotta love it. The cavity cover as I mentioned is ebony. It'll be sanded flush. My favorite part of the build so far.

Drew- I can't find that thread with pics...if you post them here that would be good to me. I'd like to see that one...and the others. Thanks Mike! That zebra is tuff my friend....stinks too. Mark, you asked about neck shaping on my last build so I thought to take these for you. I'll try to get different stages to show my approach. It's like 80 and high humidity...and after about 20 minutes I took a break... this is how much I got done. What you see is me working it down at the first fret. I'll keep going until I'm an eight or so from my target. The "target" is predetermined thickness measured from the top of fretboard to back center. Then I'll move to the 12th fret- next target and work it down the same way. Then the ends working into head and body. The third shot shows how I need to move back towards the head... The fourth was to show how the laminates can help guide but I guess that may be hard to see....but the thinner the neck gets the farther out towards fretboard they go. Pretty cool about a laminate. Best to wait awhile if the fretboard was just glued on. Quite a bit of pressure when one gets into it. Enough so the file and wood will heat up...lol Oh yeah...notice how I stay away from the fretboard....I won't get close to it until I'm close to finish and ready to sand ...then I try to stay about a 1/16th away.
