Tell Me: Remixed
I took suggestions from you kind folks , conferred with Brian, and this is the mix we agreed on. Fixes:Left side guitar, bass, drums and strings brought up in the mix. Lead vocal brought down slightly in the mix. Right side guitar in 2nd and third chorus brought down in the mix. https://soundcloud.com/stringjammer-1/tell-me-4-20

Sounds great on my system Scotty! Mix is just right IMHO. I can hear each instrument clearly and they are well placed. I love the tone of the kick too. Great job!

Good song, loved the harmony parts both vocal and instrumental. It was a bit hard to get into the vocal to begin but it grew on me. Nice mix, Scotty. I'm assuming you are feeling ok?

All sounds well placed Scott. Love the strings and slide, nice how they kinda drift in and out. One thing I would say is that the vox are bit flat in pitch in a few places. If you have melodyne, you can correct. On the whole great work. Gus

Thank you, Warren! I am feeling much, much better! I heard the pitch issues and one or two phrasing issues too. I've been working him to re-take the vocal track but he has been stubborn about it. Perhaps he'll "change his tune" (LOL) after I share your feedback with him. Have a great day, my friend!

Thank you, Gus! Glad you like my faked slide. What you're hearing are string bends done in three part harmony, on three individual tracks. There are pitch and phrasing issues that I've addressed with Brian. I will have to hammer on him to redo his track. Thanks again and have a great day!

Good overall mix, though the vocals might be a tad bit loud on occasion (intonation aside). I really like the layers of guitar, something that I don't hear often.

Sounds pretty good. My nits (read: personal preference) 1. The clean guitar is too muddy. 2. The backing vox could lose some lows <=300Hz and need to be spread out, kind of stepping n the lead vocal..

Nice job.... it takes a bit of getting used to him pushing the vocal note slide up in the verses.... since it sounds off in the process. Perhaps push it faster or just hit it to start with. I'd go with hit it. The tracks and mix are good. nice playing and good balance.

FWIW, the vocal seems to be sitting in the track a little better now, or at least I didn't notice it poking above like the previous version. There are still intonation issues IMHO... or perhaps it's just the style.

I like the mix! I agree with what others have said that the vocals are pitchy but hey ,it has a style to it too. I thought the guitar was a little muddy also but I play country , I like twang so take that with a grain of salt.

Ha, that's not where I was going. My point is/was, it's a nice song? It has it's good points (and the biggest is you) but the vox detract so much that I really could not enjoy the overall presentation :-( I can play the fiddle? But you don't want to hear me trying to do it... I like the mandolin? Those frets are there for a damn reason. People who have not played a fretless instrument will never appreciate your talent as do I. Now I play the fretless bass? And I think I'm "OK" at it? But that's a long scale fretless instrument... And it's a hell of a lot easier to play the fretless bass than a violin. Still takes some practice? But it's a whole nuther world. (probably my favorite thing to play though? the fretless bass :-)

Hi Scotty, I think this is my first time hearing this song , when the song starts hitting on all cylinders I really like whats going on Love all the textures and parts you play through out as the song and as the arrangement goes more Forte ... very thought full playing and musical parts you came up with …. when its your time to do your thing instrumentally I like what you did a lot …very masterful playing I do get the impression that you guys have an ongoing partnership / musical working relationship ... theres always a lot of give and take in those type of working relationships , it might be a good thing if he gave you another take on some of the vocals …1 st half of the song take these for what it's worth …….. I almost think that playing the D chord and the A chord 2 frets up capoed might of contributed to the singers pitchy ness.. I feel the capoed acoustic guitar gets a lot of air time and in some ways it seems as if it is holding back the first part of the songs arrangement ….. you seem to have a lot of cool stuff musically going on while it's playing , and all that stuff seems to be tippy toeing around that part ……. a little mandolin melody in the opening bars of the song might sound nice….as an addition having said all that , it is not my thing at all to be critical ….my music is vey quirky w lots of flaws … you do have something here that is very good …it sounds very organic and natural I respect that your using real instruments with real people ….thats one of the great things I like a lot about your music Kenny

Hi Kenny, Thank you for your insight. I like the idea of the mandolin for the intro. We did an unplugged version of this song that has mandolin in it as the solo instrument. I have convinced Brian of letting one of our good friends sing this one for him.

The verse vocals, especially in the first half of the song, just aren't as smooth as my ears would like to hear. The endings of the verse lines feel unsteady for me. Example..."Take me baaaacckkkk..." The flow on back is unsteady/ warbly (?), something not smooth there. I almost feel "baaaaccckkk" should go up in pitch in those areas. Instrumentation and mix sound pretty good to my ears. Wonderful lead guitar work, especially like the tastefully done solo. Like the song, good song.
