Template OR Track Templates - what do you use?
I have always used a "project template" - ie opening a new file using a pre-made template - which had all of my tracks, track folders, "go to" softsynths, busses, routing, parallel compression, fx etc. etc. set up This seemed to work really well as I could just dive in and get creating However, I am finding that my projects are getting "cluttered" with unused tracks I have just started using "Track Templates" for some drum set-ups that I use a lot and it dawned on me today that I could turn my normal "template" into a series of "Track Templates" that I can load on a project by project basis so that I am less "cluttered" Before I embarked on this route I wondered what others do? Unless one does the same thing every time, somewhere in between a fully configured project template and track templates would be the ideal. I mostly use the default Normal project then add a mix custom track templates, audio and midi tracks to it.

I avoid templates. Not because they are not a good way to work its just as Scook points out no two projects are similar enough. What I do is use an empty project and go from there. This is not from a template but a project with nothing in it that is saved as a empty project.

For me, the main reason I use projects templates is to setup Superior Drummer or Steven Slate drums with multi outs and for all the buses that I use (about ten or fifteen). Always seem to forget about track templates. Might not be a bad idea to have some project templates made with my drums and buses and leave everything else blank and use track templates to fill it as needed.

Project templates always. I have several versions of different types. From simple tracking to full orchestral, mixing or mastering. I have many track templates derived from sections of the project templates so if needed I can import those sections when needed. A great feature in Sonar.

I use both... I have a template project with my screensets/layout all ready to go Then I use track templates to drag in what I need. I have templates for softsyths, analog input for my bass, drumkits and hardward synths. Its really nice with the hardware because I can pre-route the midi and audio. Really they are both pretty awesome. George

I've never used a project template. I use track templates all the time. I have all different kinds. One for an entire set of instruments, sets of individual instruments and others that come up from time to time. All the inputs, outputs and the PC modules I use. Of course where effects are concerned, they are always subject to change so very few are in the templates unless they are a mainstay.

imagine a project template as every track template you want to use. the cool thing about project templates is they save I/O setting, preferences, screensets and a slew of other things. in that video I made it goes through some of the things that are saved and some that are not. at the end of the vid there's a list. I used to just use track templates but once I seen the powerful fortunes to be had I only use project templates now and occasionally add a track template when necessary.

Just out of curiosity: can Track Templates be backed up easily? For whenever you get a new computer? I am ALMOST ready to buy X2 so I can't check this myself. (I could check if this is possible with Sonar 8.5 but maybe things work differently? I only know you can't save and backup the setup of the toolbar in S8.5 which sucks big time: luckily the toolbar in X2 is much more simpler with those modules instead of having to add or remove every possible button one by one as you have to do in 8.5...)
Sonar 8.5 PE, Edirol FA-66, Behringer C-1. All instruments in my songs are VSTi's. Check out Soundclick

I only use one self-created project template with necessary tracks/buses and screensets for all projects for convenience. And I update it frequently as necessary. I also have exactly the same project template in another daw (well, not exactly the same because features differ).

The main advantage of a Track Template is that you can add it to a project at any stage. I have some for Battery 3 drum setups that I have used a lot. I have not used them lately, so I am not sure whether the ones that I created in Sonar 7 will still work correctly in X2.

I use track templates all the time. That way I can start with an empty project, maybe play with some guitars and vocals, and then later with just one click I can load my drum kit template and it pops open record ready. I can track the drum kit as soon as my preamps and comps are warmed up. I also use project templates... but I just use the projects. I don't bother saving them as templates. I just name a project "template" file Fred-n-Elvis_template.cwp or something like that. I like doing that because it's an easy way to be sure I know where the audio for that .cwp will end up. best regards, mike

You can make it look less cluttered if you hide unused tracks/buses and save the layout as a screenset (not that I'm against the use of track templates).

I put customization to SONAR like this into a single directory tree and link them to the appropriate places in SONAR. Backup could not be easier

who here starts every project the same way ? you open up preferences, you change some settings, like the metronome,EXC. then you go to to screen sets, set a few of those up. then you go to session drummer or superior drummer, or BFD and set up all your outputs. by the time you start working you've spent 10 minutes setting up ? like I said, even if you open up every project with no tracks and just want to save your settings, the vid is worth checking out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJmu4pqZthU

yes you can, the file is tiny too, so you can save 20 of them with a file size under 1 megabyte. the file extension for cakewalk project templates is .CWT and are stored in C:\Cakewalk Content\SONAR X2 Producer\Project Templates. the track template extension is .CWX is stored in C:\Cakewalk Content\SONAR X2 Producer\Track Templates.

Charlie, I appreciated your video. One of the things I use a ton is saved Pro Channel settings. This is separate from the Project Templates and Track Templates, but also pretty useful. This works for me because I tend to record for hours and then mix the whole project one song at a time without splitting it into lots of different projects. So, after mixing the first 4 songs using one set of FX and etc, and the musician changes instruments and I'm going to make lots of more changes for the next songs, but I might also want to go back to the first 4... I'll export the PC into a folder for the project. I know no one else works this way. I pretty much ignore project tempo for most of my projects. :-) I use project templates to change the timeline to Hour Minutes Seconds rather than measures and beats since none of my friends will tolerate a metronome. :-) I know one day I'll meet someone who likes a metronome, but I'm pretty much the only one of my friends willing to work with it.
StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen. I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

I have three project templates for the genres I play a lot (fingerstyle guitar, jazz, blues) but I tend to just use my Normal template which has two tracks set up for acoustic guitar and two for electric. As others have said it is kind of hard to pre-determine what I want to do but my Normal template gets me going on a typical project which for me is probably going to be writing a new song. I do use track templates a lot though and not just for drums, I have various soft synths pre-configured and ready to go such as a Kontakt organ, Rhodes, acoustic piano; Battery with different set-ups etc. and so on. That said, IMO there is something to be said for just experimenting with instruments and, for that matter, FX. In the end it's all good, and it is really nice to be able to have so much capacity at our fingertips. Regards,
Mike Win8(64), Sonar X3e(64) w/ RME Fireface UFX.

I usually start up with my modified "normal" template. No tracks browser and browser and multidock minimized. Project templates never seen to be quite right so I like to start as bare as possible. I have a growing number of track templates, mainly for multi out scenarios with busses. This includes several for Superior Drummer and Neil Peart drums in Kontakt.

that's very interesting. and creative. I work using tempo but also use minutes and time to keep a close eye on project time. I like having both. im also a big saver of the pro channel presets. the ones that cake offers aren't to bad either.

I also use both. I find I use track templates more often cuz the full templates have too much stuff, and I have to delete, and then add some of the newer track template stuff,... I have a bunch of track templates for loading synth configs with dimension pro (strings, horns, organ), vsampler (hammer dulcimer, bells, choir voices, pianos),... guitars, vocals, purc,... And: i have a track template folder that has all of these to add to an empty project. What is great about track templates is the buses and routing are included. So, I have a track template with a bunch of sends that creates the bus structure I cherish most. What is still way stupid is still not being able to save and load data with track templates. Even PT has provision for importing tracks (with all settings/routing,...) from other projects. Reaper has track templates with data I/O. 6+ years and Sonar still does not? To me this is another example of a feature that is not completely implemented. An example: I have 3 versions of a project that have 3 versions of the samples/tracks used for each midi/audio rhythm. I want to export the tracks with data and ALL settings to then combine them for further joy and happiness. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

they don't need to, you can have a custom blank project template with no tracks, nothing. remember you can always set up your preferences the way you like them, screensets the way you like them and then save that as a project template. that means your new project template has no tracks, nothing, just your set up setting (screentsets, preferences,EXC.)
