Tempo related audio crackling

Im working on a song, where the tempo slows to 2/3 speed over the course of a bar.  The song is mostly done but every vocal take I make over that spot gets a lot of crackling in it. As soon as the tempo is finished slowing down it goes away. The odd thing is that I'm not hearing the distortion in the guitar track at the same spot. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Is there an easy fix?

Never tried changes tempos like that. I usually have abrupt tempo changes.

Are you running FX on your vocal track? Maybe those effects track using tempo (like synced delays) that are freaking out over the massive changes all at once.

Try with no FX if you're using them. Also try freezing with FX to see if that works around.

I agree with JW - this can happen with uncorrelated 32 bit effects in a 64 bit DAW/OS. For example, it happens with some convoluters all the time. Bypass your FX bin on the vocal track.

Ahhah, Thanks! It was indeed effect related. Oddly it was VocalStrip and not the reverb. That also explains why I didn't notice it while tracking as I hadn't added the effects yet.

Booyah! Every now and then I have a good idea ;).

Does the bouncing / freeze help?

That seems pretty un-ideal to have Sonars plugins not work with tempo changes. Maybe you have to disable time based effects like delay? The copmressor, doubler and all that shouldn't be time related.

the tempo slows to 2/3 speed over the course of a bar

Some FX are going to have trouble with this no matter what, but you'll minimize problems by having no more than one tempo change per beat or note in the measure. Tempo changes between notes serve no musical purpose, and just increase the processing load. For every series of "fine" tempo changes between notes, there is one fixed tempo that would get you from one note to the next in the same amount of time.
