Terms for recording
I have sonar le 8.?. If I want to plsy something over something Ive already recorded that I like and I dont want to add to that , lets say guitar line, what am I opening or starting? Is it called a track a line what? Example : I record then playback. I plug into anyone of the other seven xlr inputs and I record over the same guitar line I just played. Then I erase that and the whole _____ is gone. I want to record something and play it back to record something else but get the chance to erase what I just did but keep the original guitar. what am I looking to open or create a new of. I dont want to overlap something already writen and loved. If I dont know what Im looking to do or say I cant ask proper questions and I cant dig for help in the F1 tab section. Example, the thing I sing into is a mic.

You need to record in different tracks. You can add new tracks by clicking INSERT TRACK to add as many as you need. Yeah track allows you to record new things..... for example... In track one you can record strumming on the guitar..... then set up track 2 and record some fills, on track 3 you might add a bass, and on track four a drum kit..... You can overdub or punch in and out to fix mistakes. I would suggest you watch some of the introductory videos on how this all works because you seem to be at the very beginning of the learning curve. There are some really good videos that will get you going quickly.

So, yes. New isnt even the term. Im so limited to time to sit and read this and that book but Im willing. I am new and I dont even know where to look. If I punch in what I think is a key word for a forum or a book or tutorial I get, 'learning how to shape clay into your fav...' and it drives me nuts. I want to stay with Sonar because people talk highly of it and I want to learn it. DVD? Tutors? let me know where I should start and continue. Thanks for responding and your time. I dont want this to be trig. PS - Ill start with LE but once I learn it what would you suggest?

Ian, a great resource for you would be the Sonar 8 videos from SWA, available in the Cakewalk store. http://www.store.cakewalk.com/b2cus/category.aspx?categoryID=44&cat=44 Well worth $5.00 (I paid full price, and it was worth it). Double check whether you have LE 8 or 8.5. There are subtle differences. Stuart has a bit of an accent, but he covers the material well. As for moving forward, any of the Sonar X1 versions are what you would be looking at. The downside is you would have to relearn the interface. But you would gain much in the way of softsynths and MIDI. At the moment, this may seem a lot to absorb, but it really adds to what you can do. Hang in there. We've all been where you are, and it really does get easier.

And you shouldn't have to plug the mic into a different input; just set the first track's input to 'None' and set the next track's input to whatever you had the first one set to.

If you have laptop or an iPad, copy the help files on it for bed time reading, or to read whenever you have extra time.. It is so useful to read the manual through, there's about 1500 pages of info. No need to go searching here and there. You don't learn it just like that, obviously, but you get an idea of what can and can not be done, and where to look for specific solutions. Go through every button and dropdown window in SONAR one by one, and read the respective explanation in the help files. In some cases it's a bit confusing, that the help files are a general SONAR help, and LE-version does not have all the features described. If you're totally new to this, you'll just get frustrated trying to jump into productive work right away.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

There is also a glossary in the help files that explains what many of the terms mean.

I love this www...site. I run stuff thru my head and I know what Im trying to ask but i dont know if people understand what Im asking. You state 'none' and I dont even know where to begin to look for 'none'. All I want to do is record. Play that back. Some how save that. Play that saved back so I can play something new. To then say that sounds "F'in!!!!!!!!!!" great. But it took me 4,000000000,0,,0,,,,0000 times finding what I wanted to lay over the original. I save the first to use it as a templete and not erase it. Two seperate tracts that can be used at any time. Once I learn the first time Ill never ask again. I do understand the F1 function. The help menu. But I get bogged down. I try and try to do this for me and for myself and i hit thta brick wall. I have 8.5 and I feel like Im missing something. Seems like there might be more, granted software learning curve, with X1. Im willing to pay for what everyone else has so it makes sence to me when 'they' say but people got to understand that because I dont know means I dont know what your looking at. I dont know what you see. I dont know what you Example : I put input into a bing search engine and I get a whole bunch of porn site.
