Test your melodic recognition circuitry with this thrilling quiz

Let's see who can figure out which chart topping (well chart skimming) 1990 UK pop hit ripped off this melody. I got it straight away - rather, I immediately recognized it, Googled it to check, and was right.

Hmm...  I just skimmed the top 100 pop chart for 1990 and didn't see either Led Zeppelin or Jimmy Page on there anywhere (and that's who I thought ripped it off of him)...

Hi,

Steve Howe had something similar but it's not 90's.

And I do not think it is a rip off, since this is probably more traditional than any rock song, which happens to rip off traditionals and other music a lot more ... is my thought.

I'm not a good one for 90's as I have not listened to "radio" or top music, since 1985 or so.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Understand that when I say "rip off," I don't mean they sneakily stole anything. I use the phrase flippantly. Of course it's a traditional tune with no copyright holders.

'This video is not available'.

I know it's 'Women of Ireland' but I don't know who borrowed the tune in the '90s. Kate Bush did a nice version of it though.

Hmm I think maybe the video isn't available in Europe. Anyway the song was "Words" by The Christians. Very recognizable melody which I got straight away hearing it in that guitar piece.

So, it was thrilling quiz for those with the in depth knowledge of the UK charts?

Never heard of it (which probably explains why I couldn't guess, though I can hear some of the licks Page stole in there!).

Wouldn't be surprised, Davey Graham was part the same folk circle as Bert Jansch, from whom Page ripped off quite freely.

I don't think that's fair. Even Mike Oldfield in his book credits folks like Jansch and learned how to play some of his stuff exactly like Bert did, so he would know how to do it. And I would NEVER be able to tell you the parts in Mike's music that have much Bert in them! There are probably way too many ....

Learning a craft and using it ... so you can't play a chord, because you are ripping off Beethoven's A-Minor-Augmented69th on 7th street?

Strange ... we're all ripping off Mozart and Beethoven ... stop fooling around!

I didn't know about "Words", but immediately recognized it from this (being a huge Mike Oldfield fan):

Page ripped off Jansch's arrangement of "Blackwaterside" without crediting him. There was a lot of that going on at the time. Paul Simon ripped of Martin Carthy's arrangement of "Scarborough Fair" without crediting him. Nobody's suggesting that they ripped off the tunes, which were traditional. But you can certainly plagiarize someone's arrangement.
