Texas sized vegatarian food in San Antonio?

I have a gig in San Antonio next week.

I want to be a tourist in the few free moments I'll have so I'm going to walk by the "river"

Does anyone know where can I order vegetarian food without being shot by the Sheriff or lynched by a posse?

I don't know, but I think you're allowed to eat vegetarian food in Texas - as long as you shoot it yourself.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

I've been to San Antonio many times, I take the family down there usually once a year.

but I'm not a vegatarian, so I have no idea where to find those types of restaurants.  sorry.

Likewise have been to San Antonio (a few, not many) times but not a vegetarian either - but I found this out of curiosity -

    Mike,

down on the River you'll find plenty of nice places that will, if not cater to your particular tastes, accomodate it.  There is (was the last time I was down there, anyway) a couple of nice up-style yuppie restraunts right above downtown (and a good martini, too).  I think it was St. Joesphine's.  Close to the Modern art museum (pretty nice, really), made from the old Pearl brewery.  Cool part of town, tho it is like a pile of spaghetti since all the highways meet there.  Joesphine Ave. exit off of 281 (mcAlister).

You are missing out of the real fun, tho, sorry.  Blanco Cafe (there are about 4 of them but the one on Blanco is the real deal).  You can find guacomole stuff there, but it is real tex mex so not much else vegetarian.  Very coarse, food not cusine.  And one of the best hamburger joints is close by, but I won't even go there.

I dont' know anybody that still lives there, or otherwise I could tell you the hot spots so you don't seem like one of the bridge and tunnel tourists (that's what we in NYC used to call the kids from New Jersey).  Sorry.  Most of my other info is old.  One of my favorite places used to be a chain called the Texas stores.  One side was liquor, the other guns.  Very authentic!

have fun, San Antonio is a great visit.

Thanks everyone and especially AT for the details.

We're are going to be working at some near by race track or test drive track all day for a few days... and then I hope to see a few sights and eat some good food.

    Oh Mike,

my wife knew the name of the place - the Liberty Bar.  Same neigborhood.  There were a couple of similiar places around there.  The food was novél.  In an old wooden house, and the floor was slanted.  Character, you know.  It is on google, but no web site.

If you go with carnovoires, however, do take them to the Blanco Café @  Blanco and Elsmere.  And Chris Madrids.  He opened a little one-man hamburger joint back in the 70s we used to eat at in college.  Nacho burgers.  The place is huge now and he's won best SA burger.  If you don't eat you can get a pitcher of Mararita.  Now I'm wanting to go back for a trip.

That sound great AT, it's me and several carnivores.

I can usually find something just about anywhere... so local goodness is valued highly even if it's not vege themed.

    Thanks.

    best,

No, only if they are corn and grass fed ;-)

And Mike, there used to be some good Vietnamese places.  After the war they flocked there, what with the military bases and similiar weather.   Worth a look, for sure.

I grew up in San Antonio.  I don't remember ever having a vegetarian meal.  Salad was that green thing they dropped on your table before the steak came out.  Beef was for all meals (not just dinner).  Pork was a beef substitute.  Becan and sausages were mandated at least once a day.  Chicken was accpetable if you didn't make a habit of it.  Rattlesnake was preferable to Chicken, but was not widely available in polite company.  Fortunately, we didn't have that too often.  Polite company, I mean.

Telling a Texan you didn't eat meat would have been similar to telling them you didn't breathe, only less believable.  I understand that things have changed somewhat.  Yankees have settled in amongst the regular folks and they've brought their strange foreign customs.  I hear that some places even offer food for Yankees and Californians.  (It's the difference between an alien from another country and an alien from another planet.)

In TX vegetarian food is illegal, either selling or eating. Real cowboys don't eat grass...they smoke it.
