Thank Yoda for Back Ups!!!

Even though I'd been working for computers since the late 90s, it wasn't until last Christmas that I started using a proper back up method. I'd manually back up my project folder and a few others regularly, but, that's it. My wife surprised me w/ a Time Machine-ready external HD, and I decided to enable the aforementioned Time Machine back up system. So now, every hour or so, TM takes a picture of my system...

And so last night I was fine-tuning a MIDI drum track, and then proceeded to start re-mapping and, for whichever reason, I ended up overwriting my project after having erased some crucial data. I still had access to the original file, but this newly created project on which I'd just spend over 3 hours tweaking and improving the track was history.

I can't tell you how crushed I felt when I noticed that I had mistakenly erased one of the parts and that the undo story was of no help. That's when I saw the little TM icon in my "task bar" - I'd never had to use it before, never even tried it so I clicked on it and anxiously awaited...

Turns out that I had 3 back ups available, each an hour different from the other. I wasn't exactly sure at which point I had ruined the project but the Time Machine GUI made it easy for me to navigate to the proper version.

On its own, it might not have been of much help, but there's this very cool feature when you save a logic project - instead of using an icon, it uses an actual snapshot of the project in its current state, making it potentially easier to identify project (if, like me, you tend forget their titles but always remember what the arrangement for your songs looks like).

So in the end, I was able to retrieve a relatively recent version and only lost an hour or two worth of work... But I've learned my lesson.  Never again will I work without auto back up enabled!
