Thanks Danny

Hi Danny,

Wanted to say thanks for the advice on the headphones.

I got the AKG 240 MKII's last week and I've been putting them to the test.

Unless the guys I asked for input from don't have the heart to tell me my mixes suck (LOL), I think I'm doing as good, if not better, job with these cans than I ever did with my HS-80's. I'm certain it's because of the lack of room treatment. I was fighting myself all these years spending countless hours tweaking, checking, rechecking, wasting CD's.

I can only imagine what it would be like in a good room with those 80's, but I am more than happy with the results I'm getting on these 240's.

Thanks for the input on them, and to the others that chimed in on various threads where the subject of headphones came up lately. There were a couple of them, and I lost track. So my apologies if someone responded and I didn't reply.

Thanks,

Bub.

In keeping with the topic theme (and hopefully Bub won't mind), I'll also say thanks to Danny for the tone and speaker opinions as well as the offer for help!

Bought my first pair of K240s in '78 or somewhere around then.

Still have em... the cable is getting sort of inflexible but they still work well.

    Rocking.

I have two pair of the K240s bought in the 80s. They still work. My cables are still VERY flexible. I guess I know what to look for in a few years.

My MKII's came with an extra cable, and an extra set of ear pads.

There cable is removable via a small DIN connector. It comes with a coil and straight cord.

Can't believe they were so cheap on Amazon. The lowest I saw them on the net was $179. Got them for $105.

Got my little portable rack set up with my ART units in there. My FTU sits on top just perfect. Everything all nice and tidy now.

I've got a set of 240s for general use and a pair of closed back sennheisers for tracking. The AKGs are very very comfortable. When I'm working I sometimes wear them all day with very few breaks. 4 hours is not unusual and I barely notice them.

The Sennheisers by comparison are quite tight, like wearing a vice but I guess that's the trade off for avoiding spill.

    You've made a great choice.

Ah Bub that's awesome man! You're quite welcome. :) I'm so glad they are working out for you. I was hoping this thread wasn't going to say...

"Thanks Danny....for nothing. That's the last time I listen to you man. These headphones are garbage and I'm so disappointed, I'm using MY frequent flyer miles pal!"

LMAO! To which I would have responded "hey wait, I'll pay you for them and you can just ship them to me!." :)

I'm looking forward to hearing your stuff. I gotta get me a pair of those. They gotta be as good or better than my K 240's. I wonder if they have the same ear cups? One thing I notice Bub...and this is gross....but if they are like my 240's, man, something starts to reek with the material they use on those cups. Honest when I tell you, I'm a VERY clean man...clean my ears with Wintergreen alcohol every day, take a shower and actually use a washcloth and scrape myself till I'm red...lol...but man, for some reason....

Those headphones pick up some sort of strange scent that is just wrong. Like, I've worked in construction in 100+ degree heat and my body never stunk like whatever the heck ends up on those ear cups. LOL! I do wear them for long periods of time and do sweat a little at times when using them. But there's something in the plastic/fake leather or whatever that is, that just doesn't like me. Hahaha!

So these days I use those Lysol wipes on them after each use and they've been ok. The cups themselves had a scent before I ever put them on...so something must mix with my sweat/natural body scent or something and man, it smells like dead rhino!

Ok wait, that may not be gross enough. It's more like what THIS would probably smell like at close range:

    http://youtu.be/PSKQ3ZNQ_O8

LOL!!! Hey, we gotta laugh on a Sunday morning...we're still alive, ya know? :) Anyway, glad they are working for you so far....and man, you got a great deal on them too! :)

James: You're welcome...hope some of that helped man. :) Let me know if there are any new developments.

You guys rock, thanks for this. :)

I have a crappy pair of Sony "noise canceling" phones that I use in the gym. Even though I was wiping them down with antibacterial wipes after every use, they still ended up stinking to high heaven. I didn't even realize at first, but for a while I kept thinking "who the hell reeks in here?" I'd sniff myself and think "nope it's not me"...but I would keep getting brief hints of this rancid smell. After a while it dawned on me that it could be the cans, and sure enough....

I found that wiping them with rubbing alcohol was the only way to get rid of it. In fact it's a good idea to do this after every use - closed back headphones can make your ears sweat without you even noticing.

I still have a pair from the mid eighties. I'm curious if the change to lower impedance has changed their sound much. I still very much trust their sound but I've long since graduated from a +4 console to using mine through my semi cheapy edirol FA-66 and it takes almost a full crank to drive the older K240's.

This is the first pair I've owned, so I don't really have anything to compare them too. I hope folks don't update theirs based off my input and discover they aren't as good as their old ones. I can't make a comparison other than to compare with the crappy ones I've been using. Although ... I don't understand how the ones I'm using are going for $80 bucks on Amazon now when my wife got them for $19 at Target years ago. They are still selling them new.

They are 55Ohms. I'm running them through an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra. It supports 55 ~ 600 IIRC?

I've always had to crank up the headphone output on this FTU ... but I noticed I had to turn it up even higher with these K240. I still have room to go ... and they are plenty loud without getting anywhere near maxing the volume knob, but yes, I did notice a big different between these and my old junk drawer headphones. It took a good 1/4 turn more to get the same volume out of these.

On a side note ... the price has been going up steadily on Amazon. They are now up to $111.

I'm funny about that stuff too. I didn't really notice anything, but my allergies have kicked in and my nose has been swollen shut for a while now. Always sounds like I have a cold when I'm talking.

Oh BTW. Now you tell me about the smell! Gee ... thanks!

The K240's have been with me for decades. My trick is to buy a new set when the ear pads and cables are shot. I get a new set and use the extra cables and ear pads to give my old ones a second chance. The ones I just tossed were about 18 years old and smelled bad.

Well, your ears are actually Petri Dishes of bacteria.

I suffer with chronic ear infections. I get them them 3 ~ 4 times a year. I have a semi-permanent drain tube in my right ear called a T-tube, and I need one in my left ear, but they won't do it in the doctors office any more, and when I had the one put in my right ear in the hospital, I stopped breathing on the table and almost died. So, I'm afraid to get the other one done.

Your ear canals can sweat and because of the elevated temperature, the ear wax and all the bacteria and all that can seep out and come in to contact with your headphones ... and that's probably what the smell is. I did notice on these headphones that my ear lobes touch the inner foam part. I've never had headphones do that before.

This is why I can never ever use ear buds. They are the most disgusting thing on the planet IMO.

Bub: I'm hoping they changed the darned things and yours don't smell. LOL! *fingers crossed* Man, that tube thing in the ears is horrible. I've not had it myself, but quite a few friends had it...I'd probably not mess with that either considering what you've been through. Let's hope everything stays ok. :)

Mikey! Hey man, thanks for checking in and you're welcome....glad you still check in from time to time. :) Was wondering how you were doing. Keep in touch when you can....hope all is going well for you bro.

I was doing the peroxide thing for a while....I hate the smell of it. Wintergreen alcohol has a nice smell to it. I just lightly dab a Q-tip and don't go too far in. Burns a little at times, but I've used it since I was a kid...so I may be doing something right. :)
