That Deep Warm sound!
Hey guys! First post on the forum.
I have a couple decent mics and my main profession is radio, cant give you the exact models of the back of my head.
But for my private home studio I have a couple simple Samson mics and an AT2035. I was at an audition at a studio in seattle and theyre mic/preamp setup had this very wonderful sound to it. I'm looking for a good setup that provides that natural warm sound with emphasis on the lower frequencies. Anyone got any tips? character and commercial voice over is the purpose of this configuration.

"natural warm sound with emphasis on the lower frequencies". A few things to try: Get an SM58 or similar dynamic mic. This type of mic has a proximity effect that occurs when you get very close too it. The proximity effect boosts the bass when you get closer to it. Note: the RE20 dynamic mic does not have the proximity effect. EV designed it to cancel out the proximity effect. It is still a very good mic for voice-over and is the standard mic for most radio stations. Another idea: try a ribbon mic. It will have a huge proximity effect. The closer you get the bassier it gets. Ribbon mics typically have a smooth frequency response with a roll off on the high end, very warm sounding. That said, almost any mic with a cardioid pattern (directional) will emphasize the lows when you get close to the mic. Your AT2035 will probably work. Get a wind screen/pop filter and place it an inch away from the mic. Speak into the mic at this distance and you will observe the proximity effect. It may be what you are looking for.

Thanks for the tips, im working with a $500 budget for my new home mic and i heard ribbons are expensive

OK. That gives me a hint of what sound you are looking for. You want warm, high quality, not too expensive. From that, it sounds like you need a condenser. For 500 dollars you could get a used KSM-44 or used AT-4047, use a pop filter, and close mic technique. These particular mics would be a little warmer than your AT2035. You could try a 99 dollar import ribbon to get an idea how ribbons sound. The cheap ones will have the good low freq and smoothness that you want but they will be a little dull on the high frequency. You could compensate the high frequency with HF EQ boost. What model mic were you using in the studio you auditioned at?

Most ribbons (esp. the cheap ones) are passive and you need a good preamp to drive them - more than the typical 55 dB gain of most interface preamps. A guitar amp is fine, but for vocals, not so much.

Hey Chad, welcome to the forums!
Tubes have a tenancy to add warmth to the audio signal. The problem is of course, to get quality, you have to spend money. Look into tube mics and/or mic pre amps. There might be something in your price range that gets positive reviews around the net.

I try to speak/sing at a bit of an angle across the mic surface, to lengthen the surface area my voice goes past, and that seems to give me a bit more warmth.
