The Bouy - 'The Snake' (cover)

I was working up for a spoken vocal part for a CHB track so I decided to blow some dust off the mic first and have a little fun into the bargain.

I'd worked out the musical arrangement for this 'Northern Soul' classic by 'Al Wilson' some time ago and really it needs a 'Tom Jones' or someone like that to sing it but I thought I'd have a crack at it anyway just for the fun of it.

Also I haven't shared anything here for ages so here goes!

Hey Jonbouy, I got a kick out this tune. Nice arrangement with the modulation and good choice of instruments.  I imagined myself in the back of a dark bar at midnight wearing sunglasses and groovin to a smokin' live band. Good live feel to this so it moves along nicely.  I hear a madman on the lead vox that just needs to cut loose and tear the sucka up. Tom Jones no. Jonbouy yes.  Just blow some smoke on it and it will be great...............Ron

Really cool tune, I've never heard the original, great to hear your voice, it's perfect for that melodic dialogue style. Mix and instruments sound great to me as well.

Man, this has me smiling! Just a great cool vibe on this Jon. I get a picture of a bunch of hep cats on stage in a smoky club, wearing dark red jackets and really cool shades. This really needs a great middle section with a honkin saxaphone solo. Very cool stuff.

Kick @$$ tune you made of this cover. I agree with previous posters that you don't need Tom Jones you do it great by yourself. One thing though, on my stereo there seem to be a little muddyness or something in the vox and also at times they seem to dissapear a little in the mix so maybe a little leveling compression or gain riding (but then it might just be the bass boost on the stereo ha ha ha, it always push the vox back). Liked this a lot.

Sadly very reduced studio equipment as it is... ASUS G750J, 8 gb RAM, Win8, Roland Quad Capture.

    JB,
I don't recall if I've ever heard any of your stuff before.  Of course, I usually lurk around here for the most part.  I'm not familar with the song or the artist.

I love the groove, horn stabs are great, organ and mix all sound great.  I concur with what others have said.  No need for Tom Jone here you did a fine job.  Next time don't wait so long to share.

    Long time no see!!

You should do a Dire Straits cover, your voice is very similar to Mark Knopfler

    Cool piece.

Ha!  I liked this.  I seem to remember some of the tune.  I really like your take on it.   Sounds like a fun song to sing.  I think you did a good job.  Nice to hear you again!!!  Oh, I really liked the drum intro!

A terrific tune, always liked the original. Great drums JB. Could the bass come forward a little? Nice textures by the BGV. I kept waiting for the vocal to go up an octave and begin wailing, tear it up a bit. Great driving version of it.

Savageopera: You are exactly right the madman is there and I can feel him being held back by self-conciousness or whatever, I'm determined to blast past all that though and your comments have been the best encouragement I could have had on this my 2nd vocal attempt.

Janet: Come on gal break out the mic!  There's only way we are gonna get the hang of this singing lark and that is by doing it.

Grant: Yup melodic dialogue, tuneful talkin' I'll take that.

Randy: You'll never know how close you came to getting this one in your inbox to put the vox on.  You'd have been ideal for this, but then I thought I ain't gonna get no better if I don't keep trying and then just got down to work.

Legion: LOL yeah you noticed the muddiness, when I started tracking it was all quiet then when I got going a mobile Fish and Chip van complete with deafening generator turned up outside and the Mrs decided to put the washing machine on, at one point the noise floor here was around -40db but I persisted through it but ended up having to process the wavs a bit to much.  I may do another take in the middle of the night with the suggestions and encouragement of gotten here to fix that.

I'm not familiar with the song, but you dragged me straight in with drums at the top.

And I reckon Mark may have a point on the Ian Dury thing

Sheesh Jon..I remember this one, but it's been decades since I heard it last. I can't believe you dug this up and it's putting a big smile on my face and trying to remember when /where I was when I first heard this..Always thought the lyrics were killer. Did Johnny Rivers do a version of this too??

Anyways, I really thought you did a great job on the vox (anyone better than me on vocals is a pro..) instrumentation / playing is excellent, as to be expected. A little more bass maybe, but a minor nit. (listening on da phones) Wonderful to hear you do this and I consider this a treat!!

    Hi, Jon,

Wow, very nice work on this soul / 60's classic rock sounding hybrid!

Great sounding mix.  The drums are fantastic, I love the Rhodes piano, the walking bass pattern, and the vox are really excellent.

I also have to agree with Frank about the Mark Knopfler vocal style comparison.  Really great job!

    Have a good one, buddy!

The Buoy singeth, and quite credibly at that.  A fine vocal to be sure, Jon.

And +1 on Frank's comments on the drums and EP on the intro, I went back and listened to that part about 6 times.  You nailed it!

Blimey I got caught out here I kinda forgot about posting this and hadn't realised I'd gotten so much feedback. Shame on me.

    Wookiee:
    Thanks for listening.... twice.

Rich: Thanks for the comments, I used to share here a lot more I need to get back into that habit I agree.

Ron: Yes good to hear from you, I've been spending some time on your new page lately it the player works really well when I want some soundtrack to keep me buoyed up when I'm doing mundane stuff on the computer and your stuff gets better and better.

    Warren: Thanks for the encouragement.

Mark: Yes I think the bass could go up too, I think what happened is I moved it up a couple of semi-tones to try to fit the vox better and lost some low-end in the process.

Songcraft: Yes I like mangling my organs from time to time, thanks for dropping by.

Mark H: Yeah, I'm still experimenting to work out what stuff my croaking works with I may give the great mans music a try at some point.

Stramster: Thanks for the pat on the back, I think MGH has a point too.

Frank: btw have you lot heard Frank's stuff! He has a great album out dontcha know... Yes I agree about the Baritone I reckon the growl went the same way as the bass when I transposed it post mix.
