The CakeTV Video Voiceover Guy...
Is it just me, or does the narrator of the Cakewalk instructional videos have a voice that's TOO deep and boomy? I don't know if it's just processing or the timbre of his natural voice, but it's kind of distracting. I usually listen with headphones and I pay more attention to how much his voice rumbles the speakers rather than what he has to say. I didn't have any problem with the earlier videos with Brandon or anyone else narrating them.

From what I hear, Melodyne can remedy that annoying dilemma. I haven't really used it, I'm just saying is all.

Ha. Actually I find him quite great. Plus, the scripting and his delivery make the videos great for me. Usually these things are ten minutes of boring intro I don't care about and then some useful info. The Cake vidz are almost all meat, and our "Carl Sagan of SONAR tutorials" gives a confident line read!

That's Dan's real voice, he sounds like that "live." Don't know if he close-mics or not, which would accent that. OTOH if he ever decides on a career as an Elvis impersonator, that extra low end could come in handy.

Actually, Hal Douglas, the voiceover announcer for the "In a world..." movie trailers, died in March. So I guess the Cakewalk voiceover guy should look out for that job opening.

I once aborted a Lynda.com video tutorial because the guy's voice was so boomy it annoyed my ears, and turning it down meant I couldn't hear the audio examples properly. It's at times like that I really wish my browser had some kind of EQ built in, or that my audio driver could host VST's. I can't comment on the CakeTV guy however because I've never heard him.

Maybe he should do a video on EQ-ing vocals and start by applying it to his own voice.

Agreed. Compression on the browser could certainly come in handy.

Don LaFontaine is often credited as the "in a world..." guy. But he's dead too, so neither can comment. But more to the point...Windows laptops often include "enhancements" that boost bass, include EQ presets, and do other violence to audio. You have to dig deep into sound > properties > more stuff > advanced > more advanced stuff > the work of tonedeaf software designers > ways to make stuff sound bad > advanced > properties of bad stuff, and turn everything off. the only one I ever found useful was enabling level normalization for Netflix.

Sounds like a SM7B microphone with bass presence boost, THE DJ announcer mic... I apologise in advance...
