The Clown Cries, remixed

I really shouldn't post two songs at once, but anyway...

I did this one several months ago but the mix was terrible. Probably having my friend sing into the back of the mic didn't help matters much, but the rest of it wasn't so great either. Then Cliff (Truckermusic) offered to work on it for me, and this is what he came up with. Dave Modisette helped him too, and Mark Stapleton helped him with the bass line. I really appreciate all their help--it was over my head. We'd appreciate your comments.

(I wrote this for a very good friend of mine, and my singer/songwriter friend, Callista Grover, did the vocals for me. Since I wrote it I've realized how much it applies to many of us.)

Thanks, Herb. (well, I can't take any thanks for it actually...) I'm sorry your guitars ended up on the cutting-room floor. :-( Maybe another song??

Sure... we need to collab on another tune.

Write something classic and we'll do it again....

The guitars are not missed on this at all...... good job.

    Sure........no problem for you!!!!!.....
I mean I'm kind of thinking that you should be able to rip one in an hour or two..... : - ) ......unlike us mere mortals that struggle!!!!!!!!!! LOL
I think Herb is on to something there ...........between the two of you............. I think you'll make it all the way to a #1 soundclick chart position and then on to Millions........and I will have the chance to say I knew them when they were just starting out.................... LOL

Anyway...........very nice piece of music there Janet..........It was a great tune to work on and I was honored that you let me do this for you.............
and I also need to say thank you to both Dave and MArk with out whose help it would not have been possible........

Janet your song is great, truly outstanding! Beautiful melodies, the vocal performance is very well done and with feeling, the strings and piano parts filled the gaps perfectly further enhancing the vocal melody.

Great arrangement and sounds, nice build ups here and there adds more greatness to the song!

The piano performance is excellent along with the other instruments.

Cliff, Dave and Mark who helped you on this song did a superb job! Great collaboration.

What mic setup/mic fx are you using? Pretty voice needs that certain "thing" to make it SHINE . . . but I can't talk because, I'm facing those same issues. When you get it right let me know.

    Excellent song!

Cliff--thanks again. The only amazing pieces I've ever been able to pull off just came out of nowhere. And the only times I get close to #1 are when I collab with Robby (hmm.. I wonder why? LOL), so, well, don't hold your breath! :-)

Greg--well, thank you very much! This is the only song (with words) I ever wrote that I still like. (I've only finished 4 or 5 though. :-) ) Glad you like it and I appreciate the kind words.

    Joseph--thanks so much!

DP (Venus)-- I'm using an MXL V63M mic and until someone mentioned it when I first posted this awhile ago, I had no idea she was singing into the BACK of the mic. Neither of us knew there WAS a front and back. So, I'm sure Cliff had to do all sorts of magic to this to make it even sound this good. Believe me--you should have heard it before! And unfortunately she moved away before I realized that, so we couldn't re-do it. Now I know, but I lost my singer. Anyway, thanks so much for listening and commenting. I'm glad you like it.

    Thank you, John!

    Janet,

I didn't realise that you wrote the lyrics to this... Very touching and very real-life. I remember the first version, but I don't recall how it sounded or mixed. This one sounded darn good to my ears. Actually, quite beautiful.

Very nice song and arrangement. The vocalist is well done but there's something about the processing that's bugging me; can't identify it exactly, but what I'm hearing is something like phase cancellation that may have been introduced at recording or processing time the result is there's a hollowness. Also there's a very small and narrow reverb, a nice lush wide reverb would be nice. Maybe there's a doubler on the vocal?

    Hi Janet,

Real nice song you have here. I like the lyrics a lot, and the playing is sublime. I had a problem with the sound though, it sounds too compressed, but i guess thats a problem from Soundclicks end.

    Overall, very, very nice.

    Regards

Very nice piece. Piano is great, nice lyrics, I like the singer too, she and the production of her voice sound very organic, not over processed like many singers.

Thank you for the listening.........I wish you could of heard the first version of this tune...........the hollow sound you hear is the sound of the room that I could not remove.....you see, at recording time the signer was singing into the BACK of the mic......so the vox that is being picked up is the reflections off the back wall...my main concern was to remove as much of this room as I could and bring the vox up front and center.....(and Yes I am thankful to my mentor Dave (Mod Bod) for his help in this).... It sounded a LOT worse originally.......
that is also why I did not add a lot of reverb to this track and / or processing...i think that would have pushed this mix backwards in to the problems all over............and yes I copied / cloned the vocal track and then off set the second track by 10 mils.........at the end of mixing this tune and after exporting it (and yes I do check my work after exporting and before before posting as many times as need be) I did not hear any outstanding problems that could be fixed......(also confirmned by my mentor) so I gave Janet the very best track I could produce.

the rest of the track does contain reverb, EQ and some compression but I added them as light as I could get away with because I was trying to go for that very intament (sp???) sound......

again.thanks for the listen and the critique

    Cliff, Janet

I heard the untreated vocal take you we're dealing with here Cliff and you have done wonders with it.

I think Rick nailed it the whole thing sounds nicely balanced and with such a great tune less is certainly more here.

    Well done.

Cliff--you're welcome. There will probably be more. :-) Maybe without backwards vocals next time?

Ed--yep--read Jon's and Cliff's replies. I had no idea what I was doing when I recorded this. Soon after I figured it out, she moved, so we never got a chance to re-do it. Cliff had a HUGE job on his hands to make it sound THIS good!

Mark--thanks so much. The lyrics are sorta special to me, so I appreciate you noticing. The mix was/is all up to Cliff--he had a huge job on his hands getting it to sound this good, believe me!

Charlie--thanks. I appreciate that a lot. Yes, the first few times I heard her, I wasn't that impressed with her voice, but when we recorded two songs, I realized what a great voice she has and the ease and passion with which she sings. I'm sad she moved away--we could have done lots more songs...

Jon--yep, you're right--he did a miracle with this one! (I still liked your drums on this, and thank you so much for that!--but this version is quite nice too.)

    Janet,

This remix is a definite improvement over the original. Kudos to you and Cliff. I understand the vocal recording issue, so I'll only offer this: Seem to me that the arrangement is a little too static (one-dimensional) for the song and could be reworked to more benefit the ebb and flow of the lyric. I think you need some variety in the instrumentation and the phrases - especially the strings which now seem to function like a pad. I don't mean this to denigrate the performance or arrangement in any way, only to say that I think you could make a lot more out of this than is there presently. This is a good song, and you could make it even better.

Gary, you are exactly right about that...I would do this completely differently now. I don't think I'll redo it soon, esp. after all the work Cliff and co. put into it, but maybe some day.
