The Coffee Haus

I have wondered how many here are actually into coffee? I don't mean the grocery store variety.

Ever roasted your own beans ? Do you know the difference between Arabica and Robusta?

What's a  full city roast? What does caffeine actually do in the plant?
I have some interesting factoids of anyone's interested.

Why do we call this the "Coffee House"?

Why do I wanna know? I dunno. Just an interesting subject for me.

I roast my own beans . I get them green from Africa usually because Africa and India has the best coffee in my opinion.

To answer your question about what caffeine does in the plant . Caffeine is the plants natural insecticide. That ingredient deters and even kills the critters that try to eat the leaves. So in effect, we are drinking an insecticide.

I'll throw in another factoid along with this answer.

When you go much past medium roast it cooks the oils and some of the natural taste out of the bean. What people taste when they drink dark roast is the slight or even more severe effect of either beginning to burn or actually burning completely the coffee bean. What you end up with depending on the degree the beans are burned is very little natural taste of the bean along with a charcoal or burned taste. Hence the term "dark roast'. Medium roasted beans are a soft brown color.

Starbucks are known for beans that have a slight dark roast quality to them. Not quite medium but slightly over that line. I personally don't care for Starbucks for this reason. I think they tend to over roast their coffee.Lots people like it though. Mesh, sounds like you might like it.

To answer your question  most any dark roasted arabica bean will make a decent  dark roast because a lot of the actual taste is derived from the over roasting process. In fact you loose a lot of the of the taste. Probably more important for dark roasts or any coffee is freshness. Most coffee sold in grocery stores is old when it hits the shelf.
Don't let the "sell by" date be confused with the "roast date". The sell by date only means it won't be so bad by then you can't stand to drink it. If you go by the roast date, then you don't want to drink ground coffee much more than a few weeks past that date. This if if you keep it in an airtight specially made container. Most people have never tasted truly fresh coffee. To get that you need to probably go to a micro roaster locally or have it shipped 2nd day after the roast.

All I know is that the monks must have been desperate to find some use for that plant. For them to pick, dry/ferment, roast, grind and boil just to have something to drink. Maybe aliens helped them with the process...

Arabic coffee is interesting, made from beans that are pretty much green, perhaps with some cardamom added and drunk from very small cups. Sometimes it deadens your mouth if you get a rough one.

In social events its served alternately with glasses of strong sweet tea late into the evening. No sleep for hours after that.

I quite like Viennese coffee roasted with fig for a change.

I love coffee ... Arabica beans is a must ... Robusta just doesn't cut it for me.
Had weekly delivery of beans to the house on the level of a small cafe, was considering starting to roast myself to cut costs. Never made it that far. Hopefully what I got was freshly toasted. Hate to think that I haven't really tasted real coffee ... I've drank so much of it over the years I must be already be embalmed for life.

I've never been to Vietnam, but I've had Vietnamese coffee. They seriously love their caffeine - gave me the jitters.

I have had fresh-roasted coffee from/in the Philippines. It is a different experience, for sure. We ground it by hand with a mortar and brewed it in a camp-style percolator. Sounds primitive, but right now I am feeling nostalgic about sitting outside in the morning before sunrise (and it's already warm out) with warm pandesal (little semi-sweet bread rolls)...can't wait to go back.

Another place they really like their coffee is Montreal. I went to a coffee shop there that was like Baskin-Robbins 31 Flavors, but for coffee. Ground to order and served in a French press. Yum. I was up all night.

Unfortunately, I drink way too much of the stuff to afford to be picky. My primary selection criterion these days is "what's on sale?".

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Yeah, I go easy on it t be honest, I can crash on it if I have too many too close together. I used to use the Vietnames drip filter, but drink Americano

But last time I went to the UK I came back with my old pot.

I've not been to the Philippines still. I should do being so close, but Laos I next on my travel agenda.

Great I see we have a few more enthusiasts here. FWIW Robusta has more caffeine in it but isn't generally as favored for the taste. I say "generally" because there are folks who have aquired a taste for it.

My wife bought me a french press which I've used a few times. I also have a Krups espresso machine. I wouldn't recommend going to your doc for a blood pressure check after drinking that. He might have you admitted.OK in small quantities like they serve in Italy. Definitely stay away from the 20oz size on that. So good it'll make you slap you momma though.

I would love to have that experience bitflipper.

btw, if anyne has been tempted by the Bialetti coffee pots, the newer rounded style is mre refined than the traditional octagonal stye.

Better screw thread (locates easier)
Better spout (If your pour to quickly, it doesn't go everywhere)
Better central column (Direct the coffee down, so if you check too soon, it's not a coffee sprinkler system)

It is harder to grip, though when un-screwing, and I am nervous of the fatigue of using the handle for leverage. But they don't need t be as tightly screwed as people tend to think.

PM me I'll try to send you some. I don't sell it or haven't planned to other than small amounts. It's mainly a hobby.

The home roasting machines are over priced. I can't financially justify buying one.
Here's what I use-
- Breadmaker, holds 1 lb. of beans
-Heat gun
-Gloves
-Infrared Temperature Gun
-Digital timer
-Homemade cooling device. I bought a cheap small box fan and built a small box with screen in it that fits over the fan. You could simply dump roasted beans in a large colander and stir them, however you risk over roasting if you don't cool the beans fast enough.
Time from green beans to roasted beans- About 12-15 minutes
Beans should "off gas" C02 for at least 24 hours and be put into an airtight container.

I had to stop drinking coffee about 15+ years ago due to my stomach not being pleased with it anymore.
From a coffee drinker on a massive massive scale, to nothing took a while to get over.
Now, it tastes as it did when I 1st tasted it as a child. Muddy water

The acidity in coffee can definitely be a problem for some people. Maybe a lightly roasted brew done in a weaker mix?
