This is what happens when nobody is 'brave' enough to tell you what a prick you are being.

I dunno, however you or I may feel about the British constitution I can't help feeling if that was my 90 year old Father sitting up there I would be bloody proud of him today.

Very much a committed Naval officer even before the War and becoming part of the Royal household he'd already acquitted himself and if he'd have quietly just become an office clerk after that we'd have all reckoned he'd done enough.

But not him he made vows to the woman he loved when he asked her to marry him and he clearly still enjoys a clearly active lively relationship with his wife up until today at a time when many of us find it hard to sustain a commitment like that for a quarter of the time he has.

Add to that made some difficult vows to her on her coronation which he has also not reneged on over the same period, he has been a constant source of stability to his children and later his grand children over that period too.

He hasn't really put a foot wrong in discharging his duty within that constitution and really is difficult to see where one could have asked anyone to perform any better in that role, in my mind in actuality he's been an incredible exemplar of 'how to do it'.

Sure he's come out with some pretty thoughtless remarks during his time but speaking for myself as I dunno about you there's plenty of those that have come out of my mouth which would have put any of his reported 'faux pas' to shame.

Yeah, I thought he was playing up to his reputation with Fiona Bruce and was especially rude when he said to her "how would you know what it is like to have a professional career?" but I also got the impression he would have preferred a more worthy sparring partner in that particular interview, I certainly would have.

So yeah I can understand criticism of our constitutional set up as it stands, but if you were going to pick a player for that particular game I'd say he's been a bloody good one overall and I hope I look that well on it at 90.

Good for him.
