The End Of Days - Acoustic Rock (mastered it)

I wrote this today - figured I'd lay it down as a scratch track. How does it feel? Is the hook there? Does it have "that thing"??

MGH...you should like this vocal...

Hi Joshua.  This could be a good rocker.  For just vocal and acoustic, you should be able to get better tone out of your Sonar.  It sounds really small and compressed.  It could sound huge with this arrangement.  The lyrics are dark of course but overall, I would keep going.

Can you give me some suggestions for "more-bigger'er"? Basically it's a single track of everything. Panned and bussed to chorus and reverb.

It is pretty highly compressed, but that's because there's such a differential in the verse and chorus volume. Let me know what you think.

Hi Joshua, you have another good beginning here.  I agree with Rimshot that you're missing something in either the mixdown or mastering process.  It's OK to compress things, but you have to turn the makeup gain louder to compensate for the loss of volume that comes out of the compressor.  In fact, with just voice and acoustic, you may not need to compress at all, or, at least, very lightly.  After the mixdown, you might try running the  mix through a limiter with the output set at -1 or -2db to get your levels up to par.  Keep experimenting because you are writing some good material.

    All the best,

    Hey Lynn,

How's about we get together and we can share secrets? I'll tell you, I do alright as far as my peers go, but I would love to look over some one elses shoulder.  Shoot, even a webcam session on skype... what do you think? You could even look at this mix.

    Hey, Joshua,

It's great to see you back around on the forum!

This is really a great song with excellent potential!  I really love your vocals on this, but something definitely sounds wrong with your gain staging.  It seems to be super squashed and is barely audible without cranking the volume up way out of normal proportion.

Did you possibly make any recent changes to your setup?  I remember commenting on quite a few of your really cool older songs a while back, but they all seemed to be normal volume-wise back then.

Either way, you've got a killer good song here, nice writing and spirited performance.  Have a good one!

I like it, but there is something funky in the chorus. Out of tune and time, so it is throwing my appreciation of the whole tune off.

It also sounds like the whole thing is being run through a "Vintage AM Radio" plug.

Nice stuff Joshua. I like your voice. Very strong.
Some of the lyrics, that I caught, seemed very fresh. To me, the 'end of days' part should be half-time of the way you're singing it. JMO.

    Bob -

I did make some changes. I added a tube compressor as a premamp and it's also running through a Behringer mixer. I used to run everything direct into my EMU0404 but not I've got it all staged through the behringer, to the tube compressor, to the zoom16 interface. Then I add additional compression on each track to kill the high parts.

This hasn't really been mastered at all. Just enough to make it listenable. I'd love for someone to talk me through the proper gain staging...

     Hey James,

Great playing and singing there. As others have already mentioned the gain staging needs some work to get the mix to the level it needs to be.

Hey Josh you're right i love your vocals! this has a RHCP feel to it. the mix certainly needs some work as others have said. When you have a big differential in volume such as between the verse and chorus, it's much better to use volume automation to control levels, and have the compressor doing a little work (unless there's an effect you're going for, of course!) i don't know how you're panning things too, but i'd get the guitars pretty wide, and also widen the vocals just a smidge, you can use a little delay on one side, again to counter that narrowness factor. finally, mic'ing the guitar, it sounds a bit tinny at times, you may be able to use some eq to fix that or look at how and where you are mic'ing... but the key thing is, the coolness of the song and the singing!

awww MGH, you make me blush. I'm trying to pull together a band that would want to play this song and others I have that are like it. So I'm trying to get my signal chains proper...I want to get to the point where I can click a switch and the red light is on, versus the constant jiggering situations I'm in now...I'm close now...

Very nicely composed song Really great performances and the mix is sounding much better than when I first clicked the link. I enjoyed it as is but think it would be great and would add more dynamics if you finger picked or single note pick one of the chorus and sang that part softer and gentler then come back in heavy. Though this song sounds great to me unplugged, I really think this one would really shine with the full band treatment. JMO.

Gerat tune with a bunch of potential Josh, and the vocal really sounded great.  Agreed here with the other comments re- thin sounding.  Keep working it though, 'cause this one's worth it and you have the perfect voice for it.

It sounds like it was recorded live in a small space.  Now that's not a bad thing.  It really is very cool sounding, kinda mysterious.  The vocal IS nicely done.  Throughout there is a couple rough guitar spots but I don't have to tell you where they are.  Basically they were a bit insignificant in the overall scheme.  I listened all the way through and enjoye the listen.

Thank you everyone. It's just a scratch pad so that I don't forget the song. My intent is to do the full band treatment and to actually minimize the acoustic guitar. Not sure what that will shape up to be or when... I really do appreciate the love!

Josh.... this sounds good. I think I listened a few days back to the first version.

While this sounds pretty decent..... it could stand to be recorded better. You know what I mean. It sounds a bit distant.

From the writing perspective, I really like it. Good job.
