The Failure Epiphany...

When I started writing for my wife, I explored every possible genre. Slow Blues-ish included. This was one of those early song ideas I kept jamming to. I thought the solo was a total rip off of two of my heroes. But apparently, I failed because that's not what people heard when they heard the demo. Not that I don't see what they mean, but the names that come up usually aren't the ones I thought I was stealing from...

Ace Frehley and David Gilmour? Sounded Gilmour-ish in the 2nd half, and we know you're a Kiss fan...

Hi,

Again, and I posted in another thread about this, what you "think", and "see" is an invisible idea that few will be able to pick up and recognize. Expecting anyone to find these is probably something that would be a bit too freaky for most people.

As I have suggested to you before, you create, play and write for you and your wife. Stop worrying or thinking about the other end, until you are done putting it together, or it will never happen. The guitar bends and stretches would fit very nice with some body gymnastics, for my vision, for example, and you might want to consider that some more.

Creativity can be tough, and sometimes it might sound like ... or write like ... or paint like ... ALMOST ALWAYS because the tools are the same ... RARELY EVER because it is true.

BTW, the piece you posted WAS VERY NICE, and I only heard RAIN and wanted to hear more ... I'm just glad I did not compare or was interested in anyone else at that moment. I might have a suggestion or two, but they are private and not for public intoxication!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Believe it or not, you're the first person to mention Gilmour - and that was spot on!

I'm awfully glad to see Ace Frehley's name as he is a huge influence -  the guitar player I was thinking about is one of his influences I believe...

I'm not hearing Jeff Beck. The melodic nature makes it very much like something Gilmour would do. There's a lot of players to choose from for style matching. Don Felder also fits as does Joe Walsh.

The funny thing is that the only Jeff Beck song I've ever listened to was a cover of Stevie Wonder's Superstitious. I KNOW he is an amazing guitarist, but I just never took the time..

Likewise, I remember recording my part on a record and being told that it sounded like Steve Morse. To this day, I've never heard him.

I'm a serious failure - I was trying to channel a Jimmy Page kind of thing..

Well there's your problem. You play way too clean to sound like Page. Make some mistakes, slur a few chords and let your guitar hang about 6 inches lower. Let me know know that works. :)

I got told for years that I sound like Jeff Beck without actually having listened to any of his music. When eventually I did get around to listening to some of it, it was eerie. In parts though, not all of it. I could never come close, in truth, the guy is one of the most tasteful guitarists in the world. His rendition of  "Where Were You" at Ronnie Scott's is unreal.

Other than being told I sound like cats being knocked off an alley fence, I've had people say that they hear some evidence of Blackmore in there (VERY little I'm sure) which makes sense when you consider that Craig Goldy was the only teacher I ever had (and for not long enough) and he was heavily influenced by Ritchie, heck it was his prime influence actually.

Gary Moore is one of the names that keeps coming up. The weird thing is that I've heard only 2 or 3 of his songs, way back in the days - a guitar solo and a song called Hiroshima IIRC. A shame, really. I know he's great, I just never got around to listening to him.

I had a comparison to Steve Morse a couple of times too, and Eric Johnson. At the time I'd never listened to either. Morse is now one of my favourite players, especially with Flying Colors.
