He's being trained to be a mechanic (I'm not sure what kind). Hopefully there is more demand stateside, but that's a tough call I'm sure.

Yeah... motor pool type stuff is likely alright but then there's field mechanic stuff which... well that could get dicey. Still, mechanic sounds a heck of a lot better than infantry. Maybe he can mail us a jeep one piece at a time. Just tell him that EATING a jeep one piece at a time is not a good plan to get a Section 8. ;-)

He is a California boy who has never lived through a real "winter". His basic training was in was in Missouri. Now that he knows what it's like he should be able to survive at least one winter in Colorado.

My cousin was an Army Ranger (medical) and his basic was also in Missouri. Two of his fellow recruits died about 30 feet away from him when lightning hit their tent! His first duty wasn't much better, he was one of the first on the scene during the first Gulf War when that scud hit the Army barracks. Yuck!

I wish him well Ed. A member of my extended family was a race car mechanic and has joined the Canadian Air Force. Now he's fabricating parts for F-18's and fixing helicopters on the West coast. I'm kind of envious because I love aircraft. If they're lucky, the boys will have a great foundation for their future's.
