I just flipped to the grammies and barbra steisand was singing.  I never was a big fan of her music, but my gawd can she (still) sing.  It gave me chills to see her up there and show the young punks how it's done.

Immediate followed by some stupid rap award...nevermind.

I missed the whole show..... dang....  uhhhh I mean, Thank God!

I saw a clip on Fox this morning.... and looks like I didn't miss too much. Horrible singing in the clip. Did I actually expect talent there?...... no.

I watched the middle to the end of Walking Tall with "The Rock" and then since it was TNT...... they ran it again so I got to see the first part...... while I was surfing the net..... so I really wasn't paying attention to either the net or the TV totally.......

I caught about a whole 5-minutes, and just happened to come in near the end of Streisand. I agree with Mark. Not a fan here, but she still can sing great. I almost thought it might be lip-synced because she still sounded as good as 20-years back.

Now what was with the Lady Gaga 'egg' entrance?  Sheesh. I hate this showbiz stuff.

I missed Barbra Streisand.  However, IMO Jennifer Hudson knocked it out of the park!  Her singing was effortless and I believe she left Christina in a cloud of dust.

I was also happy to see/hear Yolanda Adams sing.  I kinda lost touch with here career and was surprised to see her on stage.

    i mean, really.

the few bright lights, like spaldings new artist award (she's been around for several years, WHY is she a 'new' artist?) and barbara's reading of that terribly smaltzy evergreen song was wonderful...

    the lady can sing:

    http://barbra-archives.com/tv/60s/mynameisbarbra_streisand.html

Thanks for that link, Mike.  My lady adores Barbra, and I'm sure she will spend the afternoon there.

An interesting side note is that I found a link there to an interview with an old friend and occasional co-writer Rupert Holmes (going back some 40+ years before he even used that name).  It's an interesting view into what it was like to work with and record this incredible singer.

Arcade Fire deserves every award they can get. By employing 20% of the under-30 year old Canadian population, they have reduced the unemployment rate in our northern neighbor, and remittances from their US income have kept the Canadian economy on track in this time of recession. Artistically they have shown that whatever you may lack in balance and imagination can be overcome with enough frenetic. And they have proven once again that a pop band can never have too many drummers.

I have to disagree with you, Slartabartfast.  I am Canadian as well but after listening to some of the tracks from the CD, I have to say what a sad state of affairs musical awards and related are in.  The mixing on this CD was atrocious, the vocals horrendous and the recordings were victims of what I call "Smashtering"... there is no dynamic range - all one in-a-you-face level:  Louder!

Am I happy a Canadian band took the award?  Yes.  Am I shocked they did due to such poor workmanship - certainly.  I would challenge them - if they'd care to - to give me their raw tracks and let me do a proper mix and master.  I'd keep the levels high, but give sonic breathing room to everything.  Most of the folks on this discussion board/site could do that too!

    How can this keep happening?

    Sad...

Excellent. This word should be adopted into the universal jargon repertoir, along with another recently-coined phrase "soul yodeling". Imago Dei, you have a way with words. Perhaps you can offer up a new verb to describe modern "R&B" vocals, you know: quadruple-tracked, compressed and autotuned into flat, lifeless audio roadkill.

The thing that I think is telling on a lot of this is that what happened to the idea of the self taught musician? Most of them are coming up through music schools that have become nothing more than paper mills...

Everyone of them is compressed to the point of auditory sameness. All are getting taught to the test..with no sense of balance here....what to do...
