The Guitar Players Version of Mount Rushmore

hi all,
I was sitting around thinking about guitar players, and how much I like to sneak some of my favorite guitar players playing styles in to my tunes & practice sessions
so I got to thinking .....
what would happen if there was a Mount Rushmore style mountain just for Guitar Players

I imagine it could get pretty interesting up there

The Guitar Players Version of Mount Rushmore
what guitar players faces would you put up on the top of the mountain

4 players at a time
keeping it to different styles , time lines or genres is ok

heres a few of my posible Guitar Player Mount Rushmores ...

example....

Old School Classic Rock

from left to right
Jimi Hendrix , Eric Clapton , Jimmy Page , Carlos Santana

Traditional Jazz,
Wes Montgomery , Joe Pass , Emily Remler , Jim Hall

Old School Blues
Muddy Waters , Albert King , B B King , Roy Buchanan

Wild one 's are OK ........
the mixing of playing styles , genres & time lines might get interesting with how some of them might look & get along up there

Segovia , George Harrison, Chet Atkins , Bucket Head ...lol

you get the idea

OK .....lets have some fun

Kenny

Only four makes it very hard but in the running would be, not in any order:

Steve Howe, Robert Fripp, John McLaughlin, Carlos Santana, Al Di Meola, SRV, Adrian Belew, Gary Moore, Jeff Healey, Jimi Hendrix, Jan Akkerman, Tommy Emmanuel, Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Bryant, Dave Hole, Dave Gilmour, Rob McKenzie, Mark Knoefler, Terry Kath, Steve Rothery, Les Paul, Mike Bloomfield, Nigel Tuffnel, Frank Zappa...

Mount Rushmore won't do, I think we'll need the entire Himalayas.

all great players you have there
+1 for needing the entire Himalayas.

the thing about using The Mount Rushmore example for me was to come up w all the interesting combination's of musical quality's , and then having a mental picture to draw from at will for inspiration or even a few laughs

let see using a few of your players

    a possible gtr...Mt..Rushmore

Frank Zappa , Tommy Emmanuel, SRV, Carlos Santana,

whew ....those 4 guitar players would be interesting sight

now taking it one step further by emulating the essence of each players greatest strengths (this is subjective of course )
what kind of musical talent will this combination of players produce

one possible description (once again subjective )
working from left to right using....,
Frank Zappa , Tommy Emmanuel, SRV, Carlos Santana,

    we get ,
a super creative musical genius who can compose music in any style , play an acoustic guitar like no buddy's business , play the blues w a fire and passion that will inspire for generations to come , and can play singing guitar melody's that will go straight to the heart & elevate a person into a state of Ecstasy
Whew... I betcha that dude can play
now if you asked me ,,,hey what would be an interesting combination of musical influences to approach to unlock the guitar w before ....
I might of either went on a fishing expedition or got all cerebral ...
by playing this little game ...I'm still quaking in my boots thinking about what that Mt Rushmore would sound like ...also I wont forget what that could sound like any time soon
it's burned in to my sub concious mind ..for life man

it could very easily be narrowed down to four

i would call it backing up and looking who learn what from who.
how many were inspired from the works of charlie christian?
many of whom didnt even know it.

who was that guy named jimmy something? jimmy rogers?
he worked on the railroad. he was blues country even back then.

who was the first great clasical guitarist? insert name
or who was the most inivative? lenny breu

    charlie christian
    jimmy rogers
    clasical guitarest "unknown to me"
lenny breu "but is that to modern for this subject?"

    Hello,

There can only be one Mt. Rushmore and only 4 heads:

    1. Charlie Christian (the first single string electric guitar player), many, many varied players are derivative of his style - Chuck Berry, Barney Kessel, George Benson, Keith Richards, Wes, Joe Pass and all blues players.
    2. Jimi Hendrix. Before Jimi we tried to avoid having our guitars feed back - after Jimi we all tried to make our guitars feed back.
    3. Eddie Van Halen. Up until Eddie all guitarist were plying the techniques pioneered by Jimi. Eddie brought us dive-bombing, tapping and single string pyrotechics.
    4. Joe Satriani. Not as ground breaking as Christian, Hendrix or Van Halen. Satriani pioneered the guitar with a fiddle virtuoso's chops.

I think that all guitars fall into being deciples of one of these four.

    ORIGINAL:

There can only be one Mt. Rushmore and only 4 heads:

Duncan MCloud must think guitar players have it pretty easy compared to
    what his deal was

I'm favoring Jimi, Charlie Christan .....with a nod to Chet & Segovia penciled in for now
    yet ,
I feel so many guitarist that have come much later on have added a tremendous amount of creativity in the way guitar has & can been played

    Allan Holdsworth, E V H, Stanley Jordan,
(for a brief example of differences in tech )
have played so unconventional & broke new ground
the unconventional has become the norm for many aspiring guitar players

    tough call ...w only 4.....
I'm inclined to concede & just give E V H The Statue of Liberty just to keep the Peace

    My votes
Jeff Beck - the only guitar player that ever made me want to cry when i heard him play.
Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew - have to be there
Zappa - an incredible lead guitar player
Al Dimeola, Paco De Lucia, John McLaughlin (or however you spell his name)- saw them together on tour and it was phenomenal
    Carlos
    Page
    Jimi
And Clapton as long as it was Cream era Clapton

    Hey
What about Les Paul? I mean most of these dudes we are all talking about would not have been there if it weren't for the fact that Les came up with the concept for the solid body electric guitar. And he is a pretty skillful picker in his own right. I had the pleasure of meeting him and talking with him for like 20 minutes about 10 years ago. I have a shirt signed by him "To Bo, Keep on Picking, Les Paul" Framed in my family room like most people would do with a Meen Joe Green shirt.

Les Paul - for his recording innovations of overdubbing and multitrack recording... just think about it for a second. There would be no Sonar!!! And the dude can play.
Steve Vai - no shock there lol
EVH - ditto to all other comments
Jimi Hendrix - ditto to above

What an awesome thread! I'm at work and will have to bookmark this and come back to it later.

Les Paul for sure! and of course EVH. And if you include Eddie, you also have to give kudos to Randy Roades....as, from what I understand, Randy was actually the pioneer of the style that Eddie perfected.

Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, and Ry Cooder could all share the same mountain.

There are so many "greats".....but not as many pioneers.

I'm thinking Hendirx, Page, Clapton, Alvin Lee....just in "time period". And maybe I'm a little bias because I learned my very first "leads" from these guys, and actually - Alvin Lee's "I'm Going Home" Live at Woodstock, was my very first. God! I worked my fingures to the bone leaning that thing.

Santana would have a mountain all to himself....as would Jeff Beck. Actually, now that I think of it....so would Hendrix.

    Some guys just stand alone.

    ....just my 2 cents.

There is one guitarist that I have to mention. You may not know of him but he is probably the most innovative and extraordinary acoustic guitarist (at least that I have ever heard). The late Michael Hedges.
