This song needs a bass.

Any takers?

Im a sucker for experimental, unpredictable arrangements.  I listened to a few of your tracks and I was not disappointed.  Very creative and out of the box musically and lyrically.  Thanks for sharing!  If no one else takes on the bass, I will.  There are better bass players than I on this forum who should get first shot.

Now to put on my critics hat..... The vocals could use some leveling in my opinion.  There are a few phrases that I strained to make out while a few others were a bit loud.  Im lazy in this department as I typically slap on a vocal rider plug in (I use Waves).  Side chain against a submix or just level it to itself, either way you will get similar results since the overall volume of the music seems consistent.

I also felt the mix could use a bit of separation.  There are a lot of cool sounds in guitar, samples, drums, etc. that deserve their own spot in the mix.  I prefer subtractive EQ in these situations, but everyone has their own taste.  It is certainly possible that what I am hearing is exactly what you wanted me to hear, in which case you succeeded!

I think you and I share a craving for innovative, experimental songwriting.  If not on this song, we should definitely collaborate sometime in the near future and see where the notes take us.  If interested, let me know and I will send you some of my more experimental stuff.  I play in a few different genres but prefer a limitless environment.

    Take care,
    Jake

I kinda like it without a bass - the kick does the job for me.

Now that David Bowie is RIP, you can claim the mantle.

For this mix, when vocals are on, you could drop guitar a little. When vocals are off, boost guitars a little. You could do this with hand and mouse clicks using volume envelope automation.

You probably know about high pass filtering? Every track that has no real bass frequencies (like cymbals, maybe guitars, maybe even vocals)  gets an eq that cuts off everything below say 200 hz?

fun stuff, dude. keep it up!

The vocal style/sound reminded my of a Peter Gabriel track, Tom is offering some interesting advise above.

hey G-lips, kak, e-soul, Mr. Daryl, and wookie monster,

I've been under the weather for awhile now and haven't been around to much. Plus, my job is piling on the responsibility this time of year. Makes it hard to get involved. I haven't turned on my daw since the day I posted this.  I miss it.

I never expected to see any replies to this, but I appreciate all the input and will take it to heart.

I look forward to the day I can return in force and get all quirky on you.

Peace, hope to see you again real soon.
