That ultra crispness just looks cheap, like direct to video movies, give me the soft film look with a bit of grain any day.
I agree. It's funny, but the better the resolution the less it looks like a movie. You become aware of things like where the lights are positioned, things you'd normally just integrate into the scene.

I recently upgraded my TV. I was surprised and disappointed that after spending more on it than every TV I've ever previously owned combined, everything looked cheesy on it, like old Star Trek or Dr. Who episodes. I was able to blur it somewhat by lowering the contrast.
I have a Samsung TV that had an amazing picture. It was like you were looking in to a piece of glass it was so clear.

It blew up, and they replaced it under warranty and I went through 3 more before I finally gave up. None of them, all the same model, looked anything like the original I had. OTA, HD, SD, all looked great on the original TV.

Did some reading and found out that even among the same model TV, the screens are not all the same, and can even be made by different manufacturers. You could line 5 of them up, set settings identical on all of them, use the same Blu Ray, and they could all look different.

Then ... they sent me a free wireless USB adapter to use with the TV, but it said I had to upgrade the firmware in the TV before I could use it. So I go online and download it and do the upgrade. Ever since I did the upgrade, it changed the internal white balance and I can't adjust it. It looks like my TV is lit up with a cool bright white fluorescent bulb. I hate it and it won't let me put an old firmware version back on.

There's two sets of picture controls ... user and service mode. The ones in service mode are the ones the guy's that charge $500 for calibration get in to and tweak. They hook an optical eye to your TV screen with a little suction cup, and it connects to software on a laptop, and they let it run for hours. Set's up all the colors and white balance in service mode, then you can adjust if need be in the user setup.

There are a few free HD color calibration patterns on u - toob ... they help a lot with setting up the color and white balance.

apparently, they are using twice the normal frame rate of movies to shoot this which should make the viewing much more realistic.

For a brief period in my youth I toyed with living at 48 hours per day. I found the additional realism, lack of motion blur and strobing to be truly remarkable. The exercise was however quite tiring. As I age, I seem to be falling ever further behind. Presently I am lucky to be able to live a 20 hour day, and in a few years I expect I will be lucky to manage even that. Noticeable gaps are appearing between moments, and even my thoughts are suffering from gaps discontinuities and motion blur.

The stuff in my head always seems to be much more high definition than all that stuff out there in the real world.  Some thoughts can make me feel queasy.  The images are intense, but the sound is amazing.  Most of the time, I feel like I'm right there in the middle of the action.

I've tried real life, but it's just too unrealistic.

with regards to having three films, I think the final instalment is going to encompass linking into LOTR with a lot of stuff not in the original book. at least, that was what I heard before filming started...

I'm concerned that by the third movie, Peter Jackson will revert to his roots and brings us Hobbits vs. Zombies

That may sell...

That was his best movie imo.

Link ... for those unfamiliar.

My favorite line, "I kick arse for the Lord!" (Fast forwarded to the scene.)

IIRC, and admittedly I may not, the 3rd film may include a lot of stuff from additional material, appendices, and the like, background stories to LOTR, again emphasizing things written by Tolkien.

Perhaps Pete is going to attempt to make up for the fact that he cut Tom Bombadil out of the Fellowship of the Ring. (He can't, by the way...)

funny enough, the excellent BBC Radio adaptation (have a listen if you get the chance) also cuts out Tom...it doesn't matter too much to the story, but it is the part of LOTR closest to The Hobbit in spirit i think...

IMDB lists three Hobbit films under Peter Jackson's filmography, with release dates of 2012, 2013 and 2014. So it does indeed appear to have been split into three movies.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Even though it looks like the Hobbit will be the first two and the supplemental tie in stuff for the third, when one thinks about the thickness of the three LOTR books compared to the single much shorter book for the Hobbit, it will be interesting to see how a reasonable pace is maintained.

I hope he doesn't screw it up. I remember seeing 'Fellowship' when it came out, and being absolutely gutted knowing I'd have to wait a year to see the 'The Two Towers', it was that good. I'd love to get that feeling again.
