"The Huge Book of Cakewalk by BandLab Tips" Is Now Available

Given that SONAR is officially not around any more, it's time for another book - The Huge Book of Cakewalk by BandLab Tips.

This one combines "The Big Book of SONAR Tips" and "The Second Big Book of SONAR Tips," but takes out the material that's not relevant to Cakewalk by BandLab. It weighs in at over 400 pages, so it's available only as a PDF. There have been some tweaks to the material but if you already have the previous SONAR books, you don't really need this (unless you want something with better copy editing, LOL). However for those who didn't get the first two books, the two combined cost $24.90, so at $19.95 I think the new book is a pretty good deal (scroll down for the contents).

Here's the contents:

I'm actually wondering the same. At the rate that Cakewalk will be updated and changed, will you be making essentially "add-on" chapters later so the book stays up to date and relevant?

In a way, that already happened when "The Second Big Book of Sonar Tips" followed the first book of tips. As to CbB, I don't know what the future will bring (mostly core changes? mostly add-ons?), so it's hard to say. Maybe the model that would work best is traditional software updates: Update the book every year or two with new stuff and create a new book. If you had bought a previous edition of the book, you'd get it for considerably less. I'd be interested in any comments.

Then again this is a book of tips, not a "How to Learn CbB" book. So whatever is in there now will likely remain relevant for some time. It can also take me a long time to figure out new tips. For example, the loop construction view has been around forever, but it seems every couple of years I stumble on some new weird thing you can do with it

Sonar, CbB is such a deep program that I have found if you think something is going to be hard to do in it think again. Often it turns out to be very simple. Tips are very important to getting the most out of it. Noticing how quickly new versions are being released it appears to be a moving target. I don't see you running out of ideas anytime soon.

I will add this with you here and contributing to the knowledge base things seem to back to the very best days of the past.

Best

In this new book, the examples and techniques you describe use only plugins included in CbB?

What if I own also pugs that were included in Sonar?

My case: I own Sonar X2 Producer. What would be best for me to purchase: both older books or the new one?

- Asus P5B-E
- Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 @2.33 GHz
- Windows 10 Pro (x64)
- RME Fireface UC (ASIO Driver)
- Sonar X2a Producer (x64)

Yes, it's CbB-specific.

Great question! I'd recommend downloading CbB (it really is better than the older versions). If you leave X2 Producer on your system, CbB will recognize the various plug-ins. So, the two SONAR books would be most relevant to you. There is some Platinum-specific material, like about Melodyne, but I'd estimate that if you use CbB, at least 85% of the two older books will be relevant.

What does it cost in pounds? In the US it's $19.95, which would be (I think) 16 pounds?

Bear in mind it's over 400 pages, and even though it has the same basic material as the first two books, there was a lot of editing involved to make it CbB-specific, update screen shots, etc. I hired a copy editor for this one, it took her two weeks. I have to at least make enough to cover the expenses.

If it wasn't a PDF, the shipping for a 400-page book would cost more than the book itself :)  Also the cost of color printing on almost every page would be astronomical. I offered it to a book publisher, but they said "no way." They're probably smarter than I am

"...only a PDF"? I'm not sure what your point is. Do you think the PDF put itself together? It takes time and effort for an experienced person to put together a product like this.

Cheers

I got the first one and it had multiple examples of things I would use.
Very helpful. The only reason I didn't get the second one was because Cakewalk had closed up and wasn't sure of its demise.
Will definitely pick this up. thanks for the info Craig.

At about 4 pence (UK pence) a page of in-depth Craig Anderton thoroughness - it's definitely going (has gone) on my digital shelf.

Thanks Craig for keeping the energy and interest going.

I don't like PDF's. I like to hold a book and read it. If it was a paperback  I would be happy to spend 40 to 50 dollars for this book.

That is just about the low end of what it would cost to purchase the pdf and have it turned into a bound hard copy. Nice to see Craig has updated his book.

I understand about having hard copy, I haven't given up on paper yet   It's just economically difficult to justify. I have an old iPad and saved all my PDF manuals in it, which has been very convenient. It's not exactly hard copy, but to have everything in one place is great. With PDFs in general, I do like being able to put hyperlinks to all the tips in the contents page, and also, the ability to search on specific terms.

You can take the PDF to a Kinko's or generic equivalent and have them print it out, double-sided, in color. They can also bind it for you. A typical price for black and white is 20 cents for a double-sided page, so you'd be looking at $40 to print the book in B&W, I don't know what the extra charge would be for color or to get it bound.

If you have college affiliations, they may have an imaging or printing department that could do it for less.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

I used to purchase Scot R Garrigus books on sonar and still use them for reference. I can do the printing in colour myself and bind but it's not really a book. Books now are a valuable commodity and I have 1st editions that  I purchased for £10 now selling for hundreds of pounds. Pdf or Kindle books have no market value except to the user.
Nothing against you and your book  which I saved anyway when you posted and Craig thanks for all your work.
