"The Iron Lady" - what a truly appalling movie :-(
Just watched it on Channel 4 - what a complete and utter pile of abysmal steaming dross That's two hours of my life I'll never get back Why didn't they go all out and just call it Carry On Maggie? With Janet Brown in the title role, Sid James as poor old Denis and Kenneth Williams as Geoffrey Howe. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that it was nothing more than a modern version of Spitting Image.... Except the Fluck & Law puppets didn't ham it up quite so much. Awful.

Have to agree about this movie. It could have been a 3 part mini series on TV. Great acting, but the real title should have been Maggie goes mad. It's really more about dementia than anything else. Kind of sad really, and not what I expected.

I saw it was on Steve and decided that seeing as how much as I despise the woman in real life, (Thatcher - not Streep), I'd give it a wide berth. Watched Aliens instead - the Xenomorphs were a lot more pleasant

I stuck it for about 10 minutes. The sight and sound of a Maggie clone made me feel queasy.

Didn't you watch the Bonneville documentary (think it was on at the same sort of time)? Excellent, and they've only just got to the flats in part 1... I wouldn't have been able to watch the Maggie film without either thinking of Dingoes, or saying "I had a faaahm in Aaaaarrrfricaah"

My wife and I are on the last episode of Season 2 of The Tudors. Great series. It's free if you have Amazon Prime. It got me so interested that I've been doing some reading on Henry VIII and the show is turning out to be fairly accurate when it comes to the major events. Not for kids ...

It got me so interested that I've been doing some reading on Henry VIII and the show is turning out to be fairly accurate when it comes to the major events. Not for kids ... As, I'd venture, is a lot of the sordid history of our 'beloved' royal family Bub. It would appear that throughout the long history of this Sceptred Isle, its first family have been guilty of every conceivable human failing, while at the same time, the ruling head of this mafiosa mob, as titular head of the Church of England, has adopted the hereditary position of Defender Of The Faith. Over the years, our Monarch has demanded from his/her subjects both respect and taxes, firstly at the point of a sword, and nowadays through the quaintly anachronistic vehicle of the Civil List. At least now, our respect appears to be optional. It seems to me that our current sovereign has taken upon herself to put the House of Windsor back in to some semblance of order, and as such is to be applauded. It does, I would argue, place her in a very small minority of those similarly dutiful among her ancestors. But one often wonders if she would have adopted such a stance if the sordid and scurrilous activities of her ancestry and progeny had actually not been made public by a news media no longer slavishly conspiring in league with the monarchy to keep these indiscretions under wraps. Vive la République.

Aw Steve - didn't you enjoy the Jubilee or the parachute jump last year? Over the years I've lurched between the monarchist and republican position and for now am ok in the former camp. Seems to me a lot of value in a nominal Head of State who doesn't have to make any decisions based on the voting feelings of a majority who align their thinking based on the whims of reality tv shows. I get far more irritated by the nonsense and guff coming out of all sides of the Commons.

It's funny but after over 10 years of living outside the UK certain things about it seem bizarre to me now....like the Royal family and the TV license. The Royals just seem like an archaic, quaint soap opera that refuses to quit. And as for having to buy a "license" to watch TV.....hooooo boy! That's just the biggest bowl of wrong....

The license is a bizarre concept I guess..on the other hand we do have a dozen TV channels and the same if not more radio stations broadcasting free from ads, sponsors, politicians and shareholders...on the face of it.

The wife and I attempted to watch the movie last night. She is a fan of Streep, so we took a look. After a looooong 25 minutes into the move, we looked at each other and turned it off. Sheeesh, what tedious piece of crap. The subject matter deserved a much better script. Randy

Would anyone else enjoy seeing a newly crowned king of England dismiss the PM and Parliment and arrest dissenters, assuming the complete control of a King of England. It might be a bad thing but it really would be interesting... especially if he was a great and good king of the people. Why have a king if he isn't really a king? If I were king....
