"The Jerk"

First off, I fully realise that there may be subtle differences between the American sense of humour and that of we English.

Anyway, on the basis that The Jerk often appears quite high up in polls of the funniest films ever, I thought I'd give it a go as it's on the telly tonight.

Well, unless it hasn't dated too well, I'm completely at a loss to understand this - I've watched nearly half of this miserable offering so far (he's just started working at the fair) and I haven't even as much as cracked a smile yet

This rubbish is painfully pitiful, or am I missing something?

I wasn't all that impressed the first time I saw The Jerk.  While I don't really understand why it gets so highly rated, I eventually saw it again--a few years later--and it did seem to grow on me a bit.  There are a few funny bits like the phone book.  It's OK, but I wouldn't give it a whole-hearted recommendation.

I had a similar experience with Dumb and Dumber.  I saw it in a theater and everyone was busting a gut because they were laughing hard.  I was sitting there thinking this is amusing, but I it seems like something I've seen from Animal House or Porky's.

Some movies are like that, I guess.  It might have helped if you saw it with an audience that was into it.

     Animal House or Porky's.

That is simply sacrilegious to mention those two movies together in such a negative way.

Animal House is a classic right up there with Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein & Caddyshack.

    Porky's is rubbish.

I don't think that has anything to do with it.  I've just seen a bit of Lee Mack's all star cast and that must be the unfunniest show in the world.

It makes the Krankies look highbrow.

Keep your shirt on, Big Guy.  Don't want them moobs flopping about.  It's just an example of the humour I saw in D&D.    I agree with you on the "classic" status of Animal House.

I appreciate what your saying Jon, and I believe that the vast majority of so-called comedy on British TV is formulaic rubbish.

The only reason I mentioned the American/English thing is that I recall an older thread where I was bemoaning Steve Martin's comedy abilities and quite a few responders mentioned The Jerk as something he was rather good in. Having spotted it on ITV4 tonight, I thought I'd give it a go - it was the previous thread that lead me to give it a transatlantic slant.

Steve Martin's comedy I can take or leave... his movie "Leap of Faith," from the early 90s is one of my favorites.

It follows some of the plot of "The Rainmaker" (an American stage play from the 1950s, later a movie).  Martin plays a fake tent-revivalist healer-preacher whose tour bus breaks down at a drought-ridden small town.

He decides that, as long as they're stuck there, they may as well have a revival - and ends up not only having his fakery exposed but is confronted with a true miracle.

I'd put it in my top 20 list of favorites.

    "It's like a ride!".
The scenes Beagle mentions are great, imho.
    I love the farewell scene.."All I need..."
And I really liked the new house.
I suppose Martin is an acquired taste. Kind of like Monty Python.

I personally think Python is hilarious, but many folks this side of the pond just don't get it.

Yes, it hasn't dated too well.

After watching the latest yogurt-to-regulate-your-bowels commercial, I can't remember why I ever wanted to have my name tattooed on Jamie Lee Curtis's ass.

I agree Strummy....The Jerk/Steve Martin movies seems like he had a license just to act stupid. I watched the Pink Panther with Martin in it and same result. However, Peter Sellers did a fantastic job as Inspector Clouseau.

Another truly funny classic was The Benny Hill Show.
