The Journey of a Pearl Music City Custom Drum Kit

Enjoyed this little documentary with one of my favourite drummers, Nick D'Virgilio (Spock's Beard, Big Big Train, Genesis etc)

Beautiful kit ... I love white marine pearl (aka toilet bowl pearl).  I am surprised the don't offer a painted finish option or maybe they do and he just didn't talk about it.  Mine is a GMS kit with an automotive finish in pink champagne sparkle.  I had it custom built in Long Island in 1999 and it still looks fantastic under the lights.

The short discussion of their selection of mic's on the kit in the Sweetwater studio was great ... the MD 421 on the toms is right out of the 1970's playbook.  If you are not a drummer or have no interest in prog-rock skip ahead to this discussion.  The engineers at Sweetwater are recording an A-list drummer, on an incredible kit and they have essentially an unlimited choice in microphones (not your standard home recording artist's mic closet) ... and these were their choices.

Hi,

Very enjoyable.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Hi,

Very enjoyable.

Not TL/DR. That's a critique I can enjoy reading.

I did not realize that Big Big Train was the new incarnation of Spock's Beard.

I have a few of SB's albums and I thought they were very nice. BBT is probably going to get a new listen from me, though what I have heard so far, is not bad at all. It's actually very good!

But I would also like to see one of these done on Farfisa, whose sound made the German bands in the 70's, and even from the various folks in Germany that built synthesizers for Tangerine Dream and then, Klaus Schulze. Pretty much all the other makers of synths do not talk about the artists, and I find that really scary ... to the point that it was VERY NICE to see one company not be afraid to show things, and Nick's understanding of the microphones and even the recording of the drums, is something else ... very technical, and neat, and obviously tested and studied.

Only D'Virgilio is from Spock's Beard, but they do feature a couple of players from two of your favourite bands; Dave Gregory (XTC, Tin Spirits) guitars, and Rachel Hall on violin was with Stackridge.
