The Killing Song

http://soundcloud.com/aaudiomystiks/thekillingsong

Ok time for a new/old track.  This track was written in 2007 and I have attempted to record it twice.  This is the second attempt.  The acoustic was recorded at my "audio school, this was the last attempt at recording at "audio school" and helped form my opinion that recording in a recording studio for me was not the best option.

The rest of the track which I recorded at "audio school" was replaced over time.  Once again everything that was replaced was recorded at home but I was still not happy the track was still sloppy.  I have had Alice lay two drum tracks for this track, one real recording and electronic drums.

None of this worked until I resurrected the track this year.  This time I put down a basic drum pattern of kicks, snares and hats, this allowed me to find a groove and fix a couple of dud notes on the acoustic using the audio snap palette.

I've then glued the whole track together.  Instead of using my TL Audio A2 (expensive compressor) for mastering I used my cheap Art Pro VLA II.  It not as smooth as the TL Audio but it is good for maximum compression.

The song is a comment on society, "The more you want, the less you get and the more get the more you want" and "Kill or be killed" are statements about the world we live in with the final analysis a bit like Revolution by The Beatles, that is I don't know if we should "Kill or be killed" or **** off, no way"

Peace and enjoy Ben

As interesting as your online persona... couldn't stay away for a listen. The theme is not my cuppa of tea but, I did enjoy your vocals tonally speaking and the overall vibe. Peace to you to Ben.

Thanks to the above poster, just remember though to all listeners, the song is a peice of social commentry and I am not really advocating "Kill or be killed".

i like your vocals on this one, they could be a little more forward though. good use of delay in the chorus. tonally it's all quite dark. the drum sound was a little heavy with just the acoustic but once the electric came in it worked much better, and also with the pad in the second verse. i like the song actually, a little more work on the mix just to spread things over the spectrum, bring up the vocals...she'll be done. cool!

thanks mgh, iwas having trouble with the stereo panning on the sfx.  i was trying to pitch shift up and down, leftand right with gr4 and the granular delay.  sonar would not let me do it, it was weird note i have not explained myself very well, sorry.

I mixed this fairly mono because i was trying to hide the out of time parts.

Thanks for listening and the comments its always nice to get to feedback.

    peace ben

The drums were a bit loud.  Otherwise great concept and well executed.  A retro rock piece.  Great singing and expression.  I found it funny to see so many "kills" in the lyrics (eventhough in my conscience I should not).

Thanks for listening vechung, don't forget it a "joke" song and the protagonist, which may or may no be me is torn between that concept (kill or be killed), which I think exists in the world.  We are told that to get ahead you must kill or be killed, so the song is not literal either, also the song is a play on words and grew out of Lennon's song Working Class Hero, were he sings:

"there's room at the top, there, telling you still but first you must learn to smile as you "KILL", if you wont to be like the folks on the hill"

So you can were I stole my idea from.

    Thanks again Peace Ben

I wasn't, this is just my observation about the world, whether I am right or wrong is another question????
