Listen to this version, it's better.  Beagle was right the first one sucked.

hey David,
you've got some good elements going on here, but the rhythms are fighting each other and it's hard to get a feel for the direction of the song.  and some of the things going on are very "out of place"

the piano sounds "wrong" instead of "jazz"

I want to encourage you to continue to work on your songs, I think you could do well if you keep learning.

I like your use of chords.  The rhythms are kind of all over the place, but somehow it works.  Avant Gard quality.

Thank you for listening John B.  I did a revised version here which is much more comprehensible than the first one.

I studied with Jimmy Giuffre who was quite an avant garde jazzer.  He was one of my main composition teachers.  Thanks for the kind words.

You're quite welcome. I think I've heard of Jimmy Guiffre.  Not everybody can get into Avant garde, but I enjoy it.

So a friend of mine suggested I turn this into the new Charlie Brown Christmas song.  haha  This is the new mix of simple sam.  We took out the mud, and took out some of the superfluous things.

Your band could be named Avant Guardrail.

This may not be everyone's (or my)  cup of tea, but at least the cup is square and the handle is on the inside, which is interesting! Best of luck with it,

cheers,

haha, tom.  Thanks for the listen.  It's actually pretty straight ahead, not that avant garde.  Not really sure what you guys think of as jazz...standards?  This could easily be a dave grusin theme or spyro gyra theme (or charlie brown). :D  The jaw harp I added for fun, it's not spose to be there.

David - Even though the genre isn't my cup-o-tea, there are several passages in the second version that I really like a lot.

So, I'm not a jazz guy, but I enjoyed listening to it.  I will say though that there was some of the percussion that was definitely too prominent in the mix... at least to my non-jazz ears .

For me the different elements of the percussion all sounded in different spaces, the brushed snare really wet the kick completely dry.  I think you have something quite interesting and a good to listen, it just needs a slightly more coherent, in a jazz way, arrangement. Will keep the furry lugs open for the remix.  Thanks for sharing.

Wookie,  It's interesting that you noticed that it needs more mixing glue for jazz coherence.  That's something I would never in a million years know.

Doesn't matter to me what the genre is labelled as, it all comes down to what it sounds like.

To me, this sounds half-finished, and not a little confused. The percussion is all over the place, what's with those huge decays on the cymbals? (like at 0:49). The sections where it thins out to just a 3/4 thing on the drums with hardly any piano are just...odd, frankly.

I don't have anything to add.  I don't get into jazz except some light jazz.  Your composition does sound like some of the jazz I have seen in Chicago.  I like the square tea cup thing!  I would suggest that when you update a song you either repost it or replace the original post link with the new one.  I think most people aren't seeing your updates. I love your SimpleSam tune. Anyway, your jazz compositions labels you as a freak of music.  LOL.  Interesting stuff.
