The Life And Times of a Purple Rhapsody track - now with a free download!
Hi, I don't know if anyone would be interested in this, or if I'm in contravention of rules of the forum, rules of decency, rules of self aggrandisement, or any other rules... but.... I'm writing a short series of blog posts on how I write my Purple Rhapsody tracks - the first is online now. It will take you from the initial inspiration all the way through to the finished track. The link to my blog is http://purplerhapsody.co.uk/blog.html and there are sound snippets on there of how the track progresses. I should point out that this is a 'live it as it happens' thing because the track isn't actually finished yet so you can follow along with my progress as it gets closer and closer to completion. Good idea? Bad idea? Suggestions for what I should focus on in my next post? Just let me know, either on here or by commenting on my blog. Hopefully I'm not offending anyone or "blowing my own trumpet" I just thought I'd share something more than just my music for a change. The link again is: http://purplerhapsody.co.uk/blog.html EDIT: I've been told there are Javascript errors showing up in some Internet Explorer versions - please try this link if you have problems with the page not being sized properly: http://purplerhapsody.co.uk/blog/?p=146 EDIT: Part 2 is up now - I talk about melody and show that I have no idea what I'm doing! http://purplerhapsody.co.uk/blog/?p=147 EDIT: Part 3 is up now - Mixing and mastering and you can download the final track. http://purplerhapsody.co.uk/blog/?p=150 Cheers, Terry. PS: I've put the tracks on Soundcloud but set them as private. I _think_ that means the snippets will not appear in my track list on Soundcloud but WILL work in my blog posts but please please please let me know if they don't and I'll make them public.

Hi Terry, interesting read this. But it's a bad idea because now I like the original piano part best . Greetings, Rik

You never know, when I actually finish the track you might prefer the finished version... or I might do a piano 'duet' version Anyway, thanks for reading and listening, I appreciate it. Cheers, Terry.

Hi Terry, Great idea! Not offensive at all. It will be very informative and handy tool for a lot of us. Thanks for posting, Rick

And, if anyone is still reading this... Thanks to everyone who has read, listened, and commented so far... The third and final part is now online. In this part I talk about options for finishing a track and rough guide to how I mix and master, and you can download the final track too! My blog is here: http://purplerhapsody.co.uk/blog.html and if you have problems with the size of the blog window the direct link to the specific blog entry is: http://purplerhapsody.co.uk/blog/?p=150 Cheers, Terry.

Hi Terry, at least I like the ending . Still think you should have used your original piano idea somewhere in this piece. But anyway, it's interesting to read what the thinking behind this piece is and how it has evolved from your initial idea to the finished piece. Thanks for sharing. Greetings, Rik

There's a lot of different links here Terry :-( Do you have a single link you can post to a streaming version of your song? Thanks.

Well, I came to hear a piece of yours (cause you're one of my favorite pianists) and I get a story. How cool! (and no need to apologize--this is cool stuff!) I left a comment on your blog, and then realized I hadn't finished reading all the stages. lol Anyway, I believe I'm listening to the final mix now and it's quite good. Love the bass and drums too. I'll have to say I agree with Rik...I'd love to see you develop that first piano part too...that was really cool. You could start over on a whole new song if you like...I just think it's worth using. Oh, there it is at the end. :) Anyway, great job!

Hi, Apologies if I didn't make it clear in the original post that these are links to a series of blog posts about a track as it's written - from conception through to completion... however, you're in luck!!!! As the track is now essentially complete and the blog posts are all done I've uploaded the full thing to Soundcloud... http://snd.sc/iysUr5 Cheers, Terry.

@morenoise - thanks Rik, I was thinking that it's a bit too similar to Riverside from my last album ( http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_6808004) which is partly why I didn't develop it as a piano piece... but I think I might do a second version as mainly piano to please you and Janet ;-) @Janet - thanks for reading the blog (and your comment on there)! It's interesting that both you and Rik want me to develop the original piano 'inspiration' in a different way than I have done. So perhaps I'll do that. Or... as an experiment in how different people develop ideas differently perhaps you could take it and develop it in your style and I could do the same (as solo piano)... and at some point in a couple of months when we've both found time to give it justice we could compare? Just a thought... Anyway, thanks for listening and reading! Cheers, Terry.

Sweet... Listening now. Lush synths. Love the progression and how it lead you right in to where the bass and supporting pads came in. Nice and punchy. It feels like your snare might be competing with some of the frequencies in the bass? And the reverse cymbal or whatever that is may could come up a bit. LFO filters, sound coming in waves now. I can hear that snare better but it could just be volume. There's a monophonic synth that's ping ponging back and fourth in my head now. In to a subtle piano, WOW you have a really obnoxious POP right at 5:07 that detracts from the beauty of this part of the arrangement... It's worth revisiting. Beautiful ending, overall a cool and different toon. I really enjoyed it. Please keep in mind, I offer my opinions freely and don't claim to be an expert of any kind. It's just the way I feel and react to what I'm hearing when I listen and comment.

Terry...that sounds so fun! Seriously...to take your idea and develop it myself would be cool. I'm not quite sure I could even play it and I'm pretty sure I don't want my piano playing compared to yours, but it's a cool idea anyway. :) I'm not sure I'll ever have time...this summer is shaping up to be even busier than the school year and studio time is practically non-existent. But I really can't wait to hear your next version.
