The Midi input light on the Instrument Track is not working, can't tell if receiving midi

When creating an Instrument Track and using a MIDI or USB keyboard, there is no midi light or midi signal receiving indicator on the program, so I can't tell if the Instrument Track is receiving a Midi or USB input from my controller keyboard as I can't get the Midi controller to play my midi Plugin instrument track.

Please don't tell me this Cakewalk program don't have a Midi input signal light on the Instrument Track or on the program somewhere confirming when it's receiving a midi signal from an external keyboard, and that the user has to go through hours of frustration trying to figure out what's the problem on if this program is receiving a midi signal or not, like most all other programs.

Is there a way to tell if the midi track is receiving a midi signal from the midi controller keyboard?

All metering on an Instrument track is audio. Right-click the track and choose Split Instrument Track to see the MIDI metering. But be aware that all meter indications on a MIDI track are on the Output side, even when armed for recording, so you'll still need to get creative to know whether the problem is on the input side (e.g. incorrect input port/channel) or output side (incorrect output channel, Input Echo not enabled, Vel+ too negative, etc). A good way to see what's coming in is to do a quick MIDI recording and check the Event List view. If nothing is recorded, and you think input port/channel is correct, enable 'Show MIDI Activity in Windows Taskbar' under Preferences > Customization > Display, and check for activity there.

If the MIDI track is echoing note events with good velocity on the right channel, but there's no sound from the synth, ensure you have patch loaded that responds to the key range in which you're playing, that Zero Controllers When Play Stops isn't silencing the synth by zeroing Mod Wheel or some other controller, and MIDI Volume is up. And if the synth has a built-in keyboard or auditioning function, try that to verify it's generating output.

The MIDI meter is shown on the MIDI tab of an instrument track inspector.

Hey thanks to both of you guys for the help.

I used both techniques.  The split track sorta worked for in a way, but I discovered I have a usb driver bug issue. because my midi keyboard works on another computer but not on my Music computer anymore, used to work. So it's a bug issue. I'll think of something else.

You can eliminate the possibility that there is some kind of SONAR issue with failure to read MIDI messages sent from your controller by using the free utility MIDIOx.

MIDI-OX is a good free utility to monitor MIDI data directly from your MIDI interface, so that you can see if anything is being received by the computer from the MIDI controller.  It allows you to test MIDI on your computer while completely bypassing your DAW software.
