The Moderns - Again
Last week I posted a song that really wasn't up to our standards. So I felt like we needed to redeem ourselves so we didn't lose to many fans. When you don't have many fans, you can't afford to lose any! Hope you enjoy this little fast paced tune called Again. Comments, suggestions, or anything else welcomed. https://themoderns1.bandcamp.com/track/again-3 gabo

I like this alot. It sounds strangely familiar, but also somewhat fresh and new. Also, you managed to get the song down to 3 minutes which I'm told is the golden ticket! (3-3'10").

Thanks man. I made a couple of tweaks based on some help from a few people. It was a bit bright. So that's toned back a bit. gabo

Well this is excellent stuff to me , mostly because it's real. And my kind of rock and roll. Good job.

Excellent! Really liked this, a very 'live' mix, everything coming through nicely and loads of energy.

It's live sounding, it's tight, it's driving, it has a little breakdown for variety, and the vocals are presented very well. Whoever got that snare sounding like that, I think they did a great job. My little crit would be, the very beginning intro, the rhythm of the drums confused me. Just between :09 and :12. cool, cool stuff! -Tom

I love this. It's fresh, as Tom said, live sounding. I like this style of music and would listen to this again and again. I'm sure it would be a good road song. Encore!

Thanks so much everyone for all the kind words. If we can entertain one person with our work, it's all worth it!! We still do much our stuff "old school." We do take advantage of the great convenience, FX, and other benefits of sonar, and digital recording, but all in all we just play and record like the old days with a tape machine, then produce our songs from there. The big difference is the "production" is now "in the box" vs the old days it was all external gear. emeraldsoul Whoever got that snare sounding like that, I think they did a great job. Thanks very much, I am the drummer, in addition to doing most of the production. The drums are acoustic and played with the song. The snare is a 1982 Tama Superstar Mastercraft artwood inlay snare, 14x6.5, that I purchased new back in the day. I use an SM57 close mic and two overhead mics, both AKG 414s. It also has a trigger overlay of the AD2 DW Collectors Copper 14x5 mixed in with it. emeraldsoul My little crit would be, the very beginning intro, the rhythm of the drums confused me. Just between :09 and :12. hmmm, not sure what that is, I'll go back and check it out. thanks gabo

The mix works here, seems to capture the energy of the players, thanks for sharing.

Yup, really good straight-head rock. It is nice hearing a "live" song performed well. Regarding the intro... I think it's the hits on :07 and :10 that Tom might be referring to. When I listened back a few times it seems they're actually on the "and" of two, but on first listen they seemed a little off time. Minor nit in an otherwise solid tune.

Thanks very much for the complements. From looking at the tom hits in the project, the tom run around :07 starts at beat 6:01 and ends at beat 7:01. The one around :10 starts at beat 8:01 and finishes at 9:01 with the straight kick starting there and the floor tom hits on the "1" beat (with a couple ahead of the 1 beat but the emphasis on the 1) of the next 7 measures. All the hits appear to be tight to the grid. I don't see anything visually out of line and to me I also don't hear anything out of time. It's all recorded to a click at 155 bpm and everything seems to align to the grid. I also checked the guitar and bass and all of that aligns to the grid as well. However, it is very interesting to me that it sounds out of time to you guys. Obviously you are all musicians so I don't take the info lightly. I'll get with my band mates and ask them if they hear anything that might give a clue. I realize it's just a small "nit" but it gets my interest up just to try to identify what's going on. thanks, gabo

No wonder I liked this... Your making me nostalgic when you write those words!! That was me in 93!! I don't care, no matter how good the canned drums they give us , they will suck compared to real drums...

Thanks everyone. I made one more change based on some input. Probably not even noticeable to most so I'm not going to point it out! We're finished with all the songs for our Blue Sky album. Our bandcamp site now has all the songs in the final order and hopefully with the final versions of all the songs. We'll let it "cook" for a bit to make sure we don't want to change anything else in terms of mastering and will start planning a release date. gabo
