Hi,
I wonder if Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart will try and write one song or two ... if they are still alive, of course!
Boyce committed suicide 20 years ago, Hart is still alive though.
One of the songs on the new album, "Whatever's Right," is a Boyce/Hart tune.
I just don't get how some people are still carrying around such animosity for the Monkees. There are many articles out there explaining their self-driven development from actors/musicians hired to play a band on a TV show (first two albums) to seizing musical control and becoming a real band (third album playing all instruments and touring playing all instruments) within just four months of the show premiering.
They were four (now 3 living) multi-talented that individuals the producers of the TV show (who later did 5 easy pieces, eazy rider, and other indie-darling films from 70s) picked after an extensive search. This is just a bit of the four's pre-Monkees work:
Davy: Broadway star - Tony nominated singer/actor for Artful Dodger from Oliver, on the same Ed Sullivan episode as the Beatles (performed song from Oliver)
Mike: Wrote Different Drum for Linda Rondstadt, Wrote Mary, Mary for Butterfield Blues Band (which the Monkess also recorded)
Micky: TV star, starred in Circus Boy, played guitar in local LA bands
Peter: Sunset Strip Folkie, buddy of Stephen Stills (who recommended him for Monkees), multi-instrumentalist
I've seen all 4 of them play in various incarnations as the Monkees and in solo settings. I was in front row at small acoustic cafe in Philly (Tin Angel) for a Tork solo show where he played Piano, Guitar, and Banjo and did it very well.
So. please, people just need to stop saying they don't know how to play, sing, or write songs (another e.g., Micky's song "Alternative Title/Randy Scouse Git" was number 2 in UK) or worse, that they are the same as Milli Vanilla (who did nothing other than dance and lip sync). It is just wrong. Even Rolling Stain (who was one of the first to crucify them in the 60s) has come around.
