The Moon In Her Eyes - seventh and final (?) mix - 9/12/13
Hello, everyone! Personal matters have kept me busy this summer (all good), so I haven't been around much, but in between events, I wrote this song just after the 4th of July. I'm trying out some new techniques both in recording and mixing, so I thought that I'd put this up for some feedback. I hope you enjoy, and I want to thank all of you in advance for taking the time to listen. Hope you are all having a good and productive summer. "The Moon In Her Eyes" can be found here: https://soundcloud.com/lynn-wilson-4/the-moon-in-her-eyes The updated version (9-12-13) can be found here: http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?q=hi&songID=12439692

Hi Lynn. It's a nice song. Almost has a Caribbean feel to it. Sounds like a good mix. It might just be me, but I'm hearing some phase issues in the vocals between 2:30 and 2:40. I like the song though. Nice job!

gave me a "love boat" vibe :-) Always a love song from you, that's nice Lynn. Made me think of the Marx Bros from the movie "The coconuts" where Groucho said, "We'll meet in the garden at midnight, I can see it now, you and the moon, you and the moon... You wear a necktie so I'll know you."

Bob, thanks for your reply. The Caribbean feel is the shuffle beat from Superior Drummer that I wrote the song around. As for the phasing issue in the second verse, that may be the harmony being slightly out of tune with the lead. I'll check that out. Robbie, it is indeed a love song. They say write what you know, and I have a personal connection to this story. I remember that Marx Bros. movie well, and I thank you for the comparison. John, I'm happy you like the song. Your words always mean a lot to me.

Lynn, Cool song, quite enjoyable. I feel like it is lacking a bit on the bottom end though. The percussion maybe high-passed a bit too high or something? I like your production on this track quite a bit. Very good.

Mark, I think you may have a valid point on the low end. The drums are "as is", but I'll revisit them, too.

This is a lively tune... I think if I were going to change anything, it would be the addition of a bridge, or middle eight, with less busy bass & synth... something to break it up, and add some interesting contrast... I'd also like to hear a little more lows on the kick... Very cool lyrics and your distinctive singing make this very appealing... Great work Lynn...

Frank, I'm going to take you up on more lows from the bass drum. I like your idea on the bridge, but rather than stick one in this song, I would prefer to write a new song with a different structure. However, you never know. This song is still open, and in order to keep it from being too long I will think hard about this. Thanks for taking the time, and congratulations on your new CD.

Nice song. Cool beat and nice lyrics. The only suggestions I have are mixing the drums and bass a little higher. The vocal is a little bit too on top of the song instead of inside it. I can barely hear the drums, although the percussion is quite prominent. Overall it's a nice song.

Hi Lynn, nice song, excellent lead guitar. The beginning is a bit surprising, seems to start from nowhere. Maybe some percussion as an intro would be nice. Rik

@ Boomin36Beatz - Thanks for taking the time to listen and respond. I saw your idea of ping ponging some MIDI parts, which I liked. I did ping pong the lead guitar at the beginning and end of this song. @ Chandler - I remixed this song, and maybe it'll be closer to your liking. I notices those issue, too. Good ears and good catch. @ Rikki - Thanks for your kind compliments. I don't know if the remix is better or not, but I appreciate your comments and suggestion. The song is as open as can be, so changes can easily be made. Thank you all for your time and ideas. This song is so new that I'm still getting a handle on it, but you all are helping me see the big picture more clearly.

The original mix is much cleaner... I do like the heavier kick in the new mix, but the overall sounds too hot, and I'm hearing some disistortion...

Love songs make up the vast majority of the best music ever written. I've even been known to pen one or two? But I have a few that go in the other direction too :-( In the beginning In the end "Love Song" "Eat things and don't exist anymore*" It's a cycle which thankfully has broken. That is.... "IF" you'll wear a necktie in the garden at midnight? *Edited and sanitized for general consumption.

Hi Lynn! Nice song and I like your vocals. Instrumentation is quite nice. I only listened to the second mix and, I too hear distortion. It isn't in the vocals though, so I'm wondering if it is in your mix? Needs a bit more low end to get that beat going! I'd like to hear the bass and kick more. Not too much more bass, but the kick is missing. Regards, Dan

Edited: listened again this morning with fresh ears ... Much better on the too-hot levels... Snare could be mixed up slightly... Crash Cymbal seems over used (too repetitive), and is decaying too quick... blend in a couple different, good sounding crash samples, and use sparingly... Just my take... Very cool tune...

Frank, thanks for listening yet again to this song and your good advice. I remixed it this morning and took out some of the cymbals, changed the sample, and boosted the snare a bit. To my ears, those were all good changes and they improve the song. I may be honing in on this, at last, but I've heard it so frequently that I may not see the forest for the trees, yet.

Crash sounds better... I do agree with Rik about the abrupt beginning... Try copying a quick drum fill from somewhere later in the song, and paste it in at the beginning... I think that would help a lot... BTW, I've caught myself singing this tune to myself a few times lately...

Hey Lynn, The second mix is a real improvement in clarity here on my end. I commend you for wading out into new waters with mix techniques. Whatever you're doing it works well. I can tell you put real feeling into the song. As always your vocals are very good. I like your guitar additions too. Hope you can make it back here on a more regular basis.

Nice job - great vocals. The song flows very well. I like the guitar soloing. I agree with the kick drum needing more bottom end, and maybe a louder snare as well. Great rhythmical textures.

@Starise - Thanks, Tim, for the kind words. I hope to be back here more often once I take care of some personal business. I'm glad you like the mix which is partially due to the Focusrite VRM box that I purchased a few months ago. @ Geno - Thanks for taking the time to listen and respond. I'm a big fan of yours, and your words carry a lot of weight with me. I did remix this with your suggestions in mind and posted it today. It can be found here: http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?q=hi&songID=12439692, or in the first post. BTW, I love your instrumental that you have up, and I'll respond to it later when I have more time. To all newcomers to this forum, this is the kind of help that one can expect from here. So many golden ears and so much good advice!

I was talking to a woman who once recounted how much she enjoyed the moon through her eyes, and I have to say with some immodest pride? It was after "an episode" where I was on shameless display on the hotel balcony with her gazing up from the boardwalk below... (it was a warm night and I thought the room lights were dim enough?)
