you should be able to download or stream either one...

this is an Aimee Mann song, that my friend Jim (who has never recorded, or been recorded before) wanted to do. this was a one afternoon kind of session, first takes, very quick and down and dirty.
i produced it, and played (2) electric guitar tracks on top of his (3) acoustic tracks and vocals.

he really enjoyed it, i think i might have provided him with enough care to want to put a small recording rig together and start writing songs.
any comments on the mix are appreciated.

Sounds OK here considering you only did a quicky on it, he does sound like he should be doing some recording as the tune is listenable.

well, even tho it was quick, it should be as dialed in as i would want it as a finished product....
i like that we didn't beat the life out of it, it's fun to just lay it down without even thinking it thru....
    thanks wookie!

This doesn't sound thrown together to me at all. A very nicely done kind of thing. It isn't all Bat but I can still hear your vibe in it. Great arrangement. If it were me( and it isn't) I would add more space to the vocals...not in terms of reverb, but in terms of stereoscopic effect...like a small delay between sides or a "Beatleish" kind of thing. You could even play with eq between sides to get more of a difference...the kind of thing that plays tricks with your head....just a thought. Great collaboration there Bat!

yes, i would say, 'not thrown together' is correct..
but down and dirty and quick, it was....
i have only two vocal tracks...
i had him sing the main vox twice..
and i blend it in and out as needed.....

it would not be hard to take the 2nd vocal, and put a doubler on it, and pan it hard left and right...
but that's where the two taylor guitars are...
i could bring their pans in to about 50%, and take the vox out to 100%, but it might constrict the middle then.

    so many options...

    thanks wildman...
i guess the '66 callout is kinda similar to some of the older folk songs, arrangement wise....

studio wise, not so much... they used a lot of PLATE back then,
and i don't have any of that on this....

i used a regular room reverb, in conjunction with a slap back echo

plus, 3 rhythm acoustic guitars playing the same part blended together,
    that's not so '60's.......

I like the song and the arrangement.  The mix sounds good. It is smooth, no top or bottom heavy, just relaxed. Good job. Needs some drums.

yeah, A mann writes some cool stuff..
some only know here from the first stuff (voices carry era) and some have never even heard that stuff!

i guess i favor her more 'folk' stuff, with a modern edge....

    thank you mark,
i'll let my friend know about your comment, he'll be pleased,
he's really not a regular musician type,
came to it later in life,
i think this was his first chance to see how a recording gets put together...
he was a little shocked at how quick/easy it was,
    but honestly,
you sit down, and capture a performance, it doesn't take much longer than the time to set the mics up, get levels, and hit the red button!
granted, i COULD do a lot more with this....
i'm on the fence as to whether or not to let it go,
    or experiment on it.

i could add drums, percussion, back up vox,
i could put some spacey synth pads on it, ala Floyd,
i could do an aggressive echo'd out guitar solo....

or i could pare it down to one voice, one guitar.

maybe i'll try all the above!
    LOL

    thanks rimshot,
for checking this one out and commenting.....

i've got a new mix of this i'm working on....
    kept this one....
but thought i'd try a brighter mix, less verb, more mids in the guitars,
    just a more modern sound.

even tho i like the smooth sound, it's easier to listen to...

definitely worth pursuing IMO - has a great folksy/REM vibe - some straight ahead drums would be great on it

    thanks for listening daryl.....

i don't think we'll be adding any drums on it,
    it works as is......
    but you're right,
a straight drum part would totally work....

i've even thought of deconstructing it a bit, and adding spacey drums and synth like a Floyd tune,
    something like "Dogs"......
if i DO experiment with it, that's probably the direction i'll take it,
cuz my buddy's a big floyd fan,
it would freak him right the PHUCK out to hear it like that....

Kind of a mix between 60's and 2000's feel to the mix. I liked it a lot, well done.

Nicely done you guys. Love this song on the HD Videos in iTunes. I did have to download your version and re-master the sound for a 128kpbs version, for my listening pleasure. I will send you a file if you like Gonzo to see how it turned out. I re-mastered it in Ozone 6 with a custom preset I had created for re-mastering CD's. Worked really great on everything and sounds pretty good if I do say so myself. Still dealing with my cancer problem but seem to be getting better. Great job on Aimee Mann's wonder song The Moth and your friend sang this one very well. Nice one!

    thanks for listening......
i guess this song is making people think of 60's era folk tunes?
i don't know, and not a huge fan of Mann, so i don't know her background,
but it is a very simple and straightforward song and mix,
    with no tricks,
just a bit of ambience put on the various things and faders brought up.

the original had drums, half way thru,
we wanted to do a different version of it.

Nice one!

    Peace and Blessings, John

    thanks for listening john...
    and glad you like it!
and feel free to use the file anyway you want,
    but....

this is already a mastered file,
mastered as hot as it should be.....
i would never suggest mastering a file twice.....

normally i master using 24 bit and 44.1khz files, and master to output to redbook standard 16 bit/44.1khz.
my typical mix has a average RMS of about -22, and peaks at about -6,
and usually i bring up the average RMS to about -12, with peaks to -0.3.

i will then rip a 320kpbs mp3 directly thru wavelab from the 16 bit file (this is as far down the scale of lossy formats that i am willing to go),
and one of the reasons i usually allow downloads from my links,
so that any critical listening can be done at full bandwidth-- i cannot stand mp3 files personally,
and the 128kbps files usually sound horrible to me.

Thanks Gonzo for your input. I use 128kpbs,because I have a free soundclick page and not a paid one where I too could use the 320kpbs, but it is what it is and so that is why I use the 128kpbs format. The preset I created in Ozone 6 is set up to search what ever song I put in and find the proper algorithm and map the song properly for complete clarity. It is very complex and I spent several hours setting it up and works on any pre-mastered CD format. There was a lot of settings to arrange, especially all the search settings for each of the 7 sections, from pre-sound to post sound and everything in between. If you go to my soundclick page all songs are 128kpbs and mastered with this preset. Thanks again for the download.

    Peace and Blessings, John
