The Nearness of You
I make no secret of the fact that I love music from the 30s and 40s. The are often melodically rich and I love the chord structures. I've added a little blues feel to this and vox harmony which are not often done on this tune. This is a great melody from Hoagie Carmichael, or as I like to call these tunes: " Songs from when music was popular" This song was also an opportunity to play the new archtop. Warning for you metal guys, this is a long way from heavy The Nearness of You http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=582907&songID=11178313 Daryl

love the tune dave....great job...I think i'd pull back the brush/kit work a tad as it sits a bit forward in the mix for my taste... love the tune tho...

Thanks for listening Tom. I was begining to think this tune is too old fashioned for anyone on this site. Brushes are hard for me to hear, so I expect you may be right on the brush volume. Thanks. Daryl

Wow! Really good stuff Daryl. The harmony sure works for me...made me think, on the 3rd listen, a female voice would sure work too. i've been in love with this song since ever since i heard James Taylor sing it on one of the Brecker brothers records years ago. Old Fashioned? Well, for me too, magic just aint what it used to be. Then again, maybe we're just a couple of rungs ahead on the merry-go-round of fashion. Somebody ( a lot smarter than me) once said "there's nothing new under the sun". Thanks for sharing your music Daryl!

Awesome Daryl. Love it. Also my favorite era and songs. Nothing beats the American songbook. My only nit would be to get rid of that crash. Sounds like a rock stick crash. In case you didn't look over at your drummer, he's stirring the soup...... Maybe try a fade up on the initial attack. Nice playin and singin. Great job.

Thanks for the tip guys, I need all I can get when it comes to drums. Consider the crash gone. You're right Tim, it is from a set of rock loops. What an ear! I'm glad to hear there are others that love these old songs too. I'm putting together a collection of them this winter, in addition to my original stuff. So you will probably see some Cole Porter and Ellington stuff over the next few months. My goal is to keep them somewhat in the original vein, but add my own elements to at least keep them somewhat unique. The harmony was an afterthought, but it changed the tune in a unique way. I'm working on a version of "Pennies from Heaven", I put harmony on that also, and it really changed the vibe of the tune. Songs from when music was popular

I did not care for the harmony on this, and I agree that the drums are a little loud... that said, I love the song, and those of the era... You did a wonderful job with this... great guitar playing, and I love your tone... keep em comin...

All cymbal and mix comments aside, I think this is one of the sweetest things I've ever heard.

This is great! Very pleasant to listen to. And the sounds are excellent. Besides the brush snare and cymbal being a little to loud it sounds perfect to me.

wow you're very prolific! and yet every song is spot-on. yes the brushes are a little loud, but the vox and guitar is what makes this..the guitar sounds very very nice Daryl. i'd love to hear a good upright bass player on this!

Daryl, Love the guitar and arrangement. I would actually keep the vocal oooh's in the background but get rid of the other harmonies on the main verses. I think the harmonies take away from the intimate setting of a single vocal performance. They are kind of distracting in my opinion. Guitar solo is too good. Sounds great.... Could also use a tenor sax or trumpet in the background to give it a small jazz/blue club vibe.... Nice... Regards

Agree with the brush / kit comments. Agree with all the other comments too for that matter. All sounds so effortless - a sign of a master of his craft.

I'm encouraged by all your kind comments. Seems unanimous on the brushes. I WILL MOVE THEM WELL BACK and post again shortly. I appreciate the comments as I have a heck of time with brushes and symbols with my bad ears. Too many years in a powerband after high school, and I've shot a lot big guns while not always wearing my hearing protection. I'm payin the price now. A couple of votes against the harmony, and I can see that. I could go both ways on that, but since I have the harmony done and I do like it that way to, I may keep the harmony as it makes it just enough different than most to make it somewhat unique. Frank - I didn't use a vocal processor on the harmonies. Thanks to you it's been collecting dust for a long time now. Thanks buddy! It also is reassuring that musicians may just keep this kind of music alive, along with all the other kinds of music that should be kept alive as well. Daryl
