The "New Fiddle Reel" (!!UPDATED!!)

Hi-ya gang!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I BOUGHT IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am trying out a new fiddle that I borrowed from a friend who rebuilds and sells fiddles. This one is a real tonal gem. It is one of the smoothest playing fiddles I have ever played also. It inspired this new tune last night. I love the sound of the fiddle and am anxious to hear what you all think of it. I think I'll just have to trade in a couple of my fiddles for it...plus some cash to boot.  The tune is very short, as to minimize the torture to your ears.

If I could manage that kind of torture, I'd be a happy camper.

Hi Scott, this fiddle sounds very nice but before I can let you buy it you have to play a longer piece .

That's a wonderful tone Scotty, really sings out doesn't it? I can hear you smiling while you were playing that..

    RobertB,
Thanks for listening. Glad you didn't see it as torturous.

    Rik,
Thank you very much! I shall post a longer piece then.

    James,
It has a wonderful, balanced tone for sure. I don't beleive I've stopped smiling since I first played it on Sunday.

    Mr. Larry,
Thanks for your ears and expert advice, however, I just got my first born back after almost 30 years, so I think I'll keep him.

a couple of yours plus some cash? Good grief! this thing must be pretty pricey... It sounds good, but there are some timing anomalies on this piece. I can hear the lows and low mids nicely on this ax.

    Robby,
yep, a little pricey, but worth it. I always have timing issues. Dang! Yeah she sure is smooth.

Hey Scott- For whatever I know about fiddles, that guy there sounds really great.  Very smooth and clean sounding.  Nice little ditty there too.

You are the only guy I know who is more prolific than Larry and James.

Fiddle sounds great.  Rock and Reel !

I'm waiting for my custom built archtop from Campellone.  I might be too afraid to take it out the case.  I didn't have anything to trade except $7,000.  None of my current guitars would have put much of a dent in the price anyway.

You know, it sounds good to me, Scotty, but I am with the Pogue, hard to get to the tonal qualities when the music is so good. :-)  Maybe that's why.  Can't be the player, can it?  Great sound, buddy!

    In response to Warren's comment.

I expect fiddle players are like guitar players.  At least for guitar players I think the REAL tone and the PERSONAL TONE comes from the fingers.

I find even for myself and other pickers, that any guitar I play sounds like "me" and not so much like someone else who plays it.  Guys that get good tone, seem to get a lot of that tone out of whatever guitar they play.  Some guitars of course sound inheriently better than others, but a players "sound", in large part, comes from how they apply their fingers to any fretboard.

Is that true for fiddlers too Scotty?

PS  Yes $7000 for a Campellone equivilent of a Gibson Super 400, only better.  Especially given that new and used Super 400s start at $11,000.  It was the best buy on a hand mand arch top anywhere.   I ordered it last fall, I should have it by June... I hope.   www.mcampellone.com

Yes, Daryl, You're absolutely right. The player is the one who draws the tone out of the instrument. Same as for guitar.

Wow! Those guitars look as nice or nicer than Gibsons! Very purdy!

Sounds great Scott.  Do you equate playing fiddle with playing guitar?  I play a fair guitar, but I can't get anything going on a fiddle at all.  I don't feel any similarities.  I do ok on mandolin though.  Must be the bow and the missing frets.

Playing  fiddle and guitar is totally different, as is mandolin or any other instrument. The main differences between fiddle and mando are the bow, frets and double strings. The only thing I equate fiddle to guitar for is the art of producing a particular tone from the instrument. That's about as far as it goes. BTW, you play more than a "fair" guitar!
