robby You Bastage, I threw down the gauntlet? You took the challenge? And won! However, not so fast… My only collaborators were children? I’m playing the rest of this game under protest. I’m competing against a team!! It took 3 of you to bring me down!!! FOUL!! FOUL!! Still though, it’s a mighty cool tune. In your own words: "I defy anyone ANYONE to post a better Christmas song than this! Anyone! This Christmas song, "IS" the Christmas song of the 2009 Christmas season... And If you do not belief it is so, it is because of personal prejudice and bigotry, which should not be part of the Christmas season... "Period""

Scotty, this one didn't do your skills justice. You didn't put into it what you do your others. First, the guy's voice carried most of the song pretty well unadorned with fills. You could have filled up gaps with fills. You're good at that, but you didn't do it here. His voice isn't stunning enough to carry the song the way he does. Even your instruments seem to match his rhythm. That gets boring. I wanted to hear counter rhythms and countermelodies, and I didn't. At the end, we could have heard a reprisal of the melody with your instruments, but you just shimmered all your instruments kinda how Jewish music does. I was waiting to hear a really sappy reprisal. That underlying arpeggiated stuff that you play sounds nice, but it's not enough. It gets old when it doesn't build much from that. I'm accustomed to hearing out-of-the-box stuff from you. This one stayed in the box.

Chapter 2 ... Returning to listen after mishap 1 wouldn't allow me to work in CW and listen to windows media player. Wow this is very well done. Those Alleluias are just heavenly. I'm not taking sides, but this is just phenomenal !!! No crits just plain enjoyed it ... twice. Roy has a wonderful voice !!! This sure beats a lot of the christmas music my dad used to play when we were decorating the tree when I was a kid.

Sue, Thanks for the listen and for your insight. Having no musical knowledge or training, and having Roy tell me to keep it on the simpler side, this was as much as I dared to do. The Jewish music thing kind of intrigued me. I never knew of that. I could learn a lot from you. I know nothing of music theory, I only know what I hear in my head and do my best to translate it into the music...whereas you know a lot about it. Teach me? Tap, Thank you very much! Glad you liked it.

Okay, it makes sense now why you were so subdued with the fills and such--he told you to keep it simple. It's just that these are things that earmark your music--fills and counter rhythms and counter melodies--and just pretty all-around vibrant music. I know rules and mechanics, but I haven't got near your imagination in music. And what's music without imagination? Mechanical, that's what.

Thank you Sue! I appreciate your take on my music. I agree with the analogy you made about music being mechanical. That is basically what I tell people who ask me what the difference is between a violinist and a fiddler. I tell them that a violinist is mechanical and plays only the structured sheet music that is in front of them, whereas a fiddler plays from the heart and improvises. Of course there are those violinists who play traditional fiddle tunes, and they play them very mechanically also and therefore don't score very well in fiddle contests.

That captures the essence of Christmas well. The lead singer is bloody fantastic. Overall great production. Kudos. Great song. Cheers Shad

Shad, glad you could drop by for a listen. Yep, that Roy sure can belt 'em out. The thing that amazes me about him is that he sings so powerful yet keeps it pure and clean, never straying off pitch. Reece, Thanks for stopping in! As I said to Shad, Roy amazes me with his poer, clarity and pitch perfection. He wrot a pretty nice song here and I am proud to have had the opportunity to work with him. Janet's flute was just what this song needed to sweeten it up for sure. I said; "Hey Janet, as long as you're laying down some flute parts, do you think I could get you to attempt some backing vox? With a lot of coaching, pushing and multiple takes, I got her to do the parts the way I heard them in my head. And there you have it! She got 'er done! I just love epic endings, don't you?

That's an impressive piece of work Scotty, very tasteful and melodic. Mix comes across really well too, plenty of clarity and bottom end. James

Yes he does sound like John Denver and he has a very good voice. You've done an amazing job with this Scotty and is nothing less than i would expect from you as i rate you amongst the top musicians on this forum, which is saying something with the talent that's here. The arrangement is inspired and Janet's vocals add the icing on the cake. The mandolins sound fantastic and i have to say again that i'm relly impressed by the recording quality you get from acoustic instruments. The production is equally as amazing to my ears. Excellent work Scotty.
