The Next Time You Look

Here's my first, long overdue song posting.

The original track is from 1978.  I added a few synths more recently in Sonar.  I think I did most of it in Sonar 7.  I look forward to and appreciate any comments.  The original recording is stereo using sound-on-sound, so there's not much I can with that anymore.

The Next Time You Look--Short & To The Point

Thanks for listening,
Jan

    Thanks a lot, Daryl.

Some friends loaned me a real set of vibes.  They found them in the basement of a house they bought.  I played them more like you'd play a glockenspiel than vibes.  If the vibes were on a separate track I'd bring them down slightly--especially in one or two spots.

I'll definitely check out the Kings.

Well at first I didn't like it butI was messin with it and got to really like it. Wow a true old school mix on reel to reel? That's cool. I might add some bass line. There is something hauntingly familiar about the sound...... like I wrote a similar melody when I first started messing with computer music. Interesting...

Thanks.  I thought about adding some bass, but I think I've already done too much processing.  I don't want to process the life out of it.

Wow, Jan!  Really nice!  It's really interesting in that it is so very much of it's time and of now, as well. The mix is just very clear and nice--I'm on earbuds and my iPhone, but the earbuds are my good ones. ;) the only crit I have is some of the plosives on the vocal.  I am sure someone here could tell you just how to do it, but I can't... Notch out something on some freq or other.  I'm so pathetic.  But, really well done, Jan. All around.

    Real nice song.

I liked the choices for the synth pads... they supported the nice, clean guitar playing.

I think, somehow, the addition of the synths may have incited and instinct, on my part, to somehow emphasize a lower frequency tonality on the vocals.

    Thanks for sharing!

jan.. .  I hope you don't wait 34 more years to post another song!!  This is really cool.  Sort of started out like America.  My only suggestion would maybe have a smidge of delay/reverb on her crystal voice.
    More!

    Cheers!

I like it...simple and to the point.

I didn't listen close to hear the plosives JB mentioned..... but.... if you have this in multi track it's easier to fix.... but I have used gain reduction and enveloping to lessen the plosives... those "P's" are really bad..... but they are not that hard to fix with a bit of care. That method might work too on a mixed track but I'm guessing the envelopes or gain reduction would need to be lessened to prevent a noticeable gap.

    This song .....I like.

One critique...the vocal kinda gets lost in spots....usually at the beginning of each
    verse...but great overall!!

I love the simple arrangement of this.  It lets her voice be heard and the performances shine.  I have a ton of recordings from the 70s, but none that sound this good.  Well done.

Wookiee, Eric and Lynn:  Thanks.  Glad you enjoyed it.

Tbosco, Guitarhacker and cclarry:  Thanks for listening and thanks for the suggestions.   Some reverb or dealing with the plosives would be good, I'll take another look at it.  Unfortunately, vox, guitar, vibes and a few synths are all on one stereo track.  What helps in one area causes problems in another.  We really should just record a new version of this and a few other songs.

It won't be 34 years until the next one.

Sounds like it could have been performed at Woodstock.  That's a compliment, BTW.  I know you can't change anything but such a nice voice could have been a bit louder.  This started a memory flood for me.  Why, just the sound you captured.  Now, I think that's great and one of the best things a song can do.
